Ideal Candidate Statement
The Ohlone College Director of Student Life ideal candidate is a seasoned student affairs professional and leader with the experience to develop, implement and direct a comprehensive approach to achieve the goals, objectives, policies and priorities for Student Life, which includes Basic Needs. The successful candidate will possess strong interpersonal communication, time management, and budgeting skills along with the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff and students across the campus community.

The ideal candidate must have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and have the ability to model great leadership. This person will also provide counsel and support services on a consistent basis. The ideal candidate will be a visionary leader who will inspire students to achieve their goals in a professional and timely manner.

The ideal candidate will foster a positive work environment and will be committed to working collaboratively with the faculty, staff, administration and students to execute relevant programs and activities that enhance the student experience and provide meaningful student development.

Position Description
Under the direction of the Vice President of Student Services, plan, organize, and direct the development and implementation of the Student Life department goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for Student Life and Basic Needs; lead the development of creative programming for students; provide strategic leadership for Basic Needs and the Basic Needs Resource Center; develop and manage wrap-around services (i.e., food pantry, self-care supplies, clothes closet, etc.) to support at-risk populations; serve as the designated advisor of the Associated Students of Ohlone College (ASOC); manage the department budget, grants associated with basic needs and food/housing security, the student activity fee, and the Associated Students accounts; supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned personnel. Candidate must possess a commitment to diversity and inclusion as well as experience leading and executing student diversity programs. Candidate must be comfortable with working with diverse backgrounds (i.e., race, gender, socioeconomic, ability, LGBTQIA, etc.). This position requires some nights and weekends.


Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Plan, organize, and direct the development and implementation of Student Life department goals, objectives, policies, and priorities; identify resource needs; recommend and implement policies and procedures; lead all strategic planning and leadership of Basic Needs and the Basic Needs Resource Center (including on and off campus advocacy for student resources, partnerships, and grant opportunities).
  2. Direct and develop the preparation of proposals, plans, and applications for the funding of programs and student resources/direct student support, including student events and activities, the food pantry, self-care station; implement new programs and monitor services; evaluate program progress and assure the disbursement of services; prepare reports relating to cost analysis and program efficiency and effectiveness.
  3. Support the Student Life Coordinator (who is Advisor to the Associated Students and Inter-Club Council (ICC) in providing leadership and counsel for the ASOC and ICC), community service agencies, and other institutions of higher education related to Student Life programs; serve as a technical resource to students regarding College policies and procedures.
  4. Manage all Student Life associated accounts, including categorical funding in Basic Needs, grant funds, district funding, and all Associated Students and Inter-Club Council accounts; lead students in the development of budgets; review and authorize expenditures and budget transfers; coordinate the investment of Associated Student funds; monitor trust accounts for campus organizations and co-curricular funds; advise ASOC and student clubs in the development of fundraising activities.
  5. Provide leadership for department members in preparing and conducting trainings for the campus related to Basic Needs Resources, the ICC handbook, methods for fundraising and overseeing student club funds, developing student leaders and other topics relating to organizational and student development; provide coaching, mediation and intervention services to students' clubs as appropriate.
  6. Oversee the planning and execution of campus-wide large scale programs (including Commencement, etc.), student sponsored activities and programs; represent the department at community events and outreach opportunities.
  7. Supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; interview and select employees, and recommend transfers, reassignments, terminations, and disciplinary actions.
  8. Provide technical expertise, information and assistance to the Vice President regarding assigned functions; assist in the formulation and development of policies, procedures, and programs; develop and implement goals and objectives, policies and procedures for the Department.
  9. Plan, organize, and implement long and short-term programs and activities designed to develop assigned programs and services.
  10. Develop and prepare the annual preliminary budget for the Department; analyze and review budgetary and financial data; control and authorize expenditures in accordance with established limitations.
  11. Monitor, track, and complete all mandatory budget reporting, including the State Chancellor's Office mandated submission of annual Basic Needs spending reports.
  12. Direct the preparation and maintenance of a variety of narrative and statistical reports, records and files related to personnel and assigned activities.
  13. Communicate with other administrators, personnel and outside organizations to coordinate activities and programs, resolve issues and conflicts, and exchange information as needed.
  14. Operate a computer and assigned software programs; operate other office equipment as assigned; drive a vehicle to conduct work as assigned.
  15. Attend and conduct a variety of meetings as assigned.
  16. Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Any combination equivalent to: bachelor's degree in counseling, social work, career development, or related field;
AND
Five years increasingly responsible experience in student services, counseling, behavioral sciences or student affairs;
AND Commitment to community college goals/objectives of being an equity-based and anti-racist institution, and providing quality programs and services for culturally, socio-economically, ethnically, and academically diverse students and students with disabilities; personal qualities to work effectively and with sensitivity in a multicultural environment; awareness of and commitment to the needs of non-traditional and/or re-entry students with diverse abilities and interests; AND Must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practices.
