Under the supervision of the Finance Manager for both the Department of Neurology and the Department of Neurological Surgery, in the School of Medicine this position provides financial project management and transactional support for 100+ unique financial projects. They are responsible for GL transaction review analysis and correction, as well as ability to book financial entries in our financial system of record and provide assistance in fiscal year end close activities.

In addition, the incumbent will process correcting payroll entries and be responsible for first review of all departmental purchasing activities. The Financial Analyst is also responsible for preparing monthly financial and productivity summaries, trends, and ad hoc reports on an as needed basis. This position will also provide analytical support to implement the annual budget.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area or equivalent experience/ training.
  • At least two years of experience in a financial analyst position with 100% of time devoted to financial management in an academic medical center.
  • Ability to analyze financial data and computer reports in order to draw meaningful conclusions.
  • Ability to solve problems.
  • Strong organizational skills with changing priorities and demanding workload and to use independent judgment to make logical decisions.
  • Skills with understanding of the urgency of various tasks or inquires and the ability to adjust priorities as needed.
  • Ability to effectively and professionally communicate verbally and in writing to establish and maintain good rapport with staff, faculty, co-workers, and vendors.
  • Excellent customer service including responsiveness, support, and appreciation of the staff, faculty, and vendors. Resolves issues and anticipate the need for further action.
  • Advanced intermediate- to advanced-level proficiency in using Microsoft Excel and Word for Windows.
  • Ability to learn Department and School of Medicine accounting software and other software for spreadsheets, word processing, and database management.
  • Ability to function well in a team environment by utilizing available resources and building strong, professional relationships with other team members.
  • Skills and ability to work cohesively to ensure unit goals and expectations are met and exceeded.
  • Analytical skills to independently and tactfully assume responsibility for coordination and completion of complex projects requiring interactions with many individuals in a matrix organizational structure. Ability to work with general supervision and direction and to take the initiative to follow up on projects.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, exercise discretion, use independent and mature judgment, work independently with minimal supervision and commit to excellence.
  • Familiarity with standard concepts, practices and procedures within UC and G.A.A.P. Rely on judgment and experience to plan and accomplish goals and complete various analysis and correcting entries.
  • Understanding of University budget, accounting and financial policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Ability to learn and interpret policies and procedures to ensure compliance with Department, University, and outside agency requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand instructions and to carry out assigned tasks with accuracy. Ability to ask questions when instructions are not clear.
  • Skills to recognize problems with invoices, project expenses, and payroll and initiate timely and appropriate action to resolve them.
  • Ability to function as a member of a team.
  • Organizational skills to work with changing priorities and demanding workload.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience with UCD academic/staff/personnel payroll policies and guidelines and UCD Payroll/Personnel System.
  • Previous experience with university budget, accounting and financial policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Experience running reports from financial software and organizing the information in a clear and comprehensive report.
  • Previous experience working with various financial systems to assist with travel and entertainment reports.
  • Previous experience with database software and constructing queries and generating reports via campus systems.

Department Overview

The Department of Neurology conducts basic and clinical research on the nervous system and provides clinical care for people with neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia, epilepsy, movement disorders like Parkinson's and Huntington's diseases, tremor, dystonia, multiple sclerosis, neuromuscular conditions, headache and sleep disorders.

Our faculty includes leading neuroscientists, who work to expand our knowledge of nervous system function, as well as neurologists and psychologists who provide diagnosis and treatment for adults and children. We partner with colleagues from throughout the health system and work closely with the Department of Neurological Surgery to provide multidisciplinary team management for neurological disorders. We also offer cutting-edge diagnostic approaches, including advanced neuroimaging technologies and access to trials of new medications and other therapeutic modalities.
