What You Will Do

The International Threat Reduction Group (NEN-3) is seeking a Computer Scientist to join our mission-focused team in a shared work environment focused on creative problem solving. NEN-3 applies expertise in nuclear and radiological materials and commodities detection, packaging, international training and consultation, modeling, and simulation to reduce nuclear proliferation and enhance global security in a changing threat environment.

The successful candidate will support the Nonproliferation Application and Project Development (NAPD) Team in various programming and database management/development tasks. A key component of this job will be supporting complex software rewrites and production system management that supports mission critical processes at LANL.

In addition, there will be opportunities to learn and develop skills that support other areas within NEN-3. The group has ongoing work in nuclear security, strategic trade controls, and software development addressing global security problems. Duties will include all or a combination of, but are not limited to the following:

  • Assist in the research, design, testing, verification, and validation of software engineering and software development solutions in support of R&D initiatives.
  • Assist in the development of innovative methods, techniques or approaches to address critical technical challenges.
  • Contributes to the completion of milestones associated with specific projects and may directly contribute to the achievement of programmatic deliverables.
  • Take ownership of assigned tasks, ensuring a clear understanding of responsibilities and delivering high-quality contributions.
  • Set direction and goals for assigned work while effectively managing individual tasks and priorities.
  • Continuously expand technical expertise within the discipline while acquiring new skills in related fields. May be required to obtain additional certifications, qualifications, or advanced degrees as needed.


What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:


Technical Knowledge
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience related to the design, development, and maintenance of software applications, systems, and solutions including full stack development.
  • Knowledge/understanding of software engineering principles, design patterns, and appropriate standards.
  • Experience with modern software development methodologies such as Agile, DevOps and SCRUM and the appropriate tools and processes.
  • Knowledge/experience with programming languages such as C#, C++Java, Python and/or JavaScript.
  • Knowledge/experience with database design, security strategies and component integration.
  • Knowledge/understanding of hardware and operating systems including system architectures, network infrastructures, and client server principles.
  • Knowledge/understanding of hardware and software integration and testing.

Collaboration
  • Ability to collaborate and interact effectively with a wide range of personnel.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and follow through to completion on multiple tasks

Communication
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to present complex solution to customers that may be less technical in the computer science field in a clear and concise manner.
Other
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Q clearance


Education/Experience
Position requires a bachelor's degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 2 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.




Desired Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated experience developing innovative advanced concepts, theories, methods, techniques and approaches to address specialized problems.
  • Demonstrated experience leading technical decision-making at task level within a project; making decisions and/or recommendations that influence the achievement of key programmatic objectives.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of AI ethics, bias mitigation, and explainable AI techniques while deploying AI models in real-time applications.
  • Ability to mentor junior staff and students as they develop as programmers.



Work Location : The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Term position: Regular-status Laboratory employees applying for term-status positions may retain regular status with approval of the cognizant Principle Associate Director.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
