About the Lab : Stanford's Legal Innovation through Frontier Technology Lab (liftlab) seeks to increase access to high quality legal services in the private sector by leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and other frontier technologies. We design, investigate and evaluate AI tools in legal education and private practice that are aimed to both reduce the cost and increase the quality of legal services in a sustainable and responsible way. To bridge the gap between theory and practice, our work extends beyond conceptualization and encompasses the building of prototypes that help explore the utility of AI-based solutions. We are currently seeking an Executive Director to join our team who will report directly to the Faculty Director.
Job Description : The Executive Director for the liftlab, a full-time position, will serve as the chief staff person for the center, collaborating with and reporting to the Faculty Director, Professor Julian Nyarko. The Executive Director will work at Stanford Law School along with research staff, communicate with faculty and students, and interface with internal and external partners and vendors to advance the Lab's ambitious goals and critical mission. You will:
- Participate in the planning and initial development of the Lab, including its web presence, logo and computing infrastructure.
- Lead and oversee development, implementation, administration, and evaluation of research initiatives and programming. Oversee the development, adherence to, and implementation of program policies and procedures. This may include identifying topics for research and courses, engaging in research projects with the Faculty Directors and affiliated faculty, and Fellows and participating in special projects.
- Lead strategic planning around the Lab.
- Represent the Lab to the broader University, external community, and other stakeholders.
- Develop and maintain academic partnerships, especially with other labs and initiatives that focus on AI.
- Develop and maintain industry partnerships, especially with law firms and technology companies.
- Manage the acquisition and/or creation of novel datasets
- Create and manage content for the Lab website and other publications, including reports, proposals, policy briefings, brochures, and newsletters.
- Develop outreach strategy related to program communications, development, partnerships and fundraising/funding. Identify external funding opportunities in consultation with our External Relations team and write proposals and research grants.
- Develop and oversee strategic financial planning and sustainability for the program/entity, as needed; monitor performance and ensure appropriate controls.
- May co-teach courses and policy labs, oversee the administration of courses, and create and/or advise in the development of curriculum and advise students.
- Coach and mentor Lab staff and Research Fellows.
- Work cooperatively with other law school and broader university initiatives and programs to advance the educational and research mission of the law school and Stanford University.
Qualifications:
* Advanced degree and five years of relevant experience in area of specialization or combination of relevant education, training, and/or experience. JD or equivalent, international degree required. Experience managing a budget and developing financial plans. Experience developing program partnerships and funding sources. Research experience is highly desirable. Experience running an academic center or initiative preferred.

The expected pay range for this position is $140,184-175,260 per annum.
