Job Summary:
The Athletic Trainer will provide high-quality healthcare services to all UW-Madison students, with a focus on supporting sport programs offered through University Recreation and Wellbeing (Rec Well). This includes injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation for students participating in club sports and intramural activities.
In addition to direct patient care, this position will play a key role in organizing and overseeing an effective student observation program, helping to mentor and educate future athletic trainers. The Athletic Trainer will work collaboratively with the Athletic Trainer for Sport Programs, ensuring comprehensive healthcare coverage and promoting student-athlete well-being. This position is supervised by the Assistant Director of Athletic Training. As a valued member of the Rec Well Staff, the Athletic Trainer will actively contribute to department initiatives and serve on committees as needed.
This is an on-going full-time Athletic Trainer position that is expected to work during the academic year (mid-August through mid-May) and have summers off. Actual work schedule will be determined upon hire. This position is benefits and leave eligible. Paid time off will be pro-rated based on hours worked. Benefits coverage, such as health insurance, can be continued during the summer months, if desired.
Responsibilities: Evaluates athletic injuries, consults with team physicians and/or healthcare professionals, provides health care, and referrals for patients in support of injury care and injury prevention.
- 30% Evaluates, provides treatment and rehabilitation, and documents injuries/illnesses in consultation with health care professionals and in accordance with established practices, guidelines, and protocols
- 15% Coordinates patient care, makes referrals to various medical resources, and provides information based on injury/illness evaluations in collaboration with medical professionals
- 20% Serves as an onsite health care provider for assigned teams during practices, competitions, recreational play, or special events to ensure adequate treatment of injuries/illness and appropriate response to emergency and non-emergency situations
- 15% Advises, develops, and implements plans for injury and illness prevention, emergencies, and environmental monitoring to ensure safety of participants during practices, recreational play, events, and competitions
- 5% Organize an effective observation student program to allow students to observe athletic trainers at sport club events and in the clinic setting
- 10% Works directly with students and professional staff in organizing and providing care at sport club events as well as educating individuals on areas of injury care and prevention
- 5% Serves as a mentor and preceptor for a variety of student learners, including athletic training students, physical therapy students, resident physicians, and others, fostering a supportive, professional, and educational environment.

Education:
Required
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited Athletic Training Education Program.
Preferred
Master's Degree in healthcare or related field
Qualifications:
Required
- Minimum of three years of post-certification professional experience as an athletic trainer in a clinical or sports setting.
- Strong clinical decision-making skills, with the ability to work independently while providing exceptional patient care.
- Experience working in a team-based healthcare environment, demonstrating effective collaboration with other medical professionals including but not limited to Physical Therapists, Physicians, and Registered Dieticians.
- Comfortable providing care for a variety of sports, including both low-contact and high-contact sports, with a solid understanding of sport-specific injury prevention and rehabilitation.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ensuring high-quality patient education and engagement with students and staff.
- Commitment to student well-being and injury prevention, with the ability to implement and manage injury mitigation programs.
License/Certification:

BOC - Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer
Wisconsin athletic training license is required. If the successful candidate does not have the license, they must apply for it upon accepting the position.

This position requires most work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location, up to one day per week, if desired.

The expected salary range for this position is $57,000 up to $65,000 for highly experienced candidates. Actual pay will depend on experience, qualifications and hours worked.
This position is expected to work during the academic year (mid-August through mid-May) and have summers off. Salary will be earned on a biweekly basis during the academic year when they are actively working and is expected to total $42,750 to $48,750 per year, depending on experience. Paid time off will be pro-rated based on hours worked. Benefits coverage, such as health insurance, can be continued during the summer months, if desired.
