Job Summary
Reporting directly to the Executive Director, Office of Clinical Research (OCR), the Assistant Director, Business Unit is responsible for the management and oversight of clinical research business operations for the OCR. The incumbent leads the OCR Business Unit and is accountable for all UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center (UCDCCC) clinical trial financials. In addition, this leader serves as an external technical resource to UCDH and UC/UCOP as needed. #CA-SB

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position
- Bachelor's degree in Business or Healthcare field with a minimum of 5-7 years of progressive leadership experience, or equivalent experience.
- Highly experienced with sponsored research administration and clinical trials financial management in an academic medical center or cancer center.
- Experience with and demonstrated knowledge of ICD-10-CM and CPT classification systems.
- Experience working collaboratively with other cross-functional teams and people with a wide range of educational backgrounds.
- Advanced skills in financial analysis and reporting techniques, financial modeling and business case assessment, human resources, and risk management planning; accounting and payroll.
- Possesses a strong background and thorough understanding of accounting, human resource and financial systems/policies and a demonstrated competency related to federal costing policies and practices.
- Skills to follow and interpret the detailed guidelines related to their use in assigning codes for appropriate reimbursements and data collection.
- Advanced knowledge of state and federal regulations governing the administration of sponsored research projects as well as with those of private granting agencies in order effectively to direct pre- and post-award management of funds.
- Demonstrated advanced analytical skills to define problems, formulate solutions, and make recommendations.
- Possesses knowledge and skill to apply mathematics, quantitative and qualitative analysis, evaluative techniques, and business planning techniques.
- Project management skills to establish timelines, goals, coordinate multiple departments, evaluate cost/benefit analyses, establish cost effective procedures and systems; define roles and responsibilities, determine required resources; monitor progress and make appropriate adjustments, all while achieving the desired outcome.
- Extensive technical knowledge and understanding to read, comprehend, interpret, and instruct others relative to State/Federal regulation, procedures and policies regarding clinical research billing, reimbursement, and coding policy applicable CMS Local and National Coverage Decisions, the complexity of which varies based on the type of service being provided.
- Thorough understanding and knowledge of applicable laws, policies, contract terms and clinical research design and logistics to appropriately identify and rebut misleading information, inaccuracies, or misrepresentations received during negotiations.
- Comprehensive knowledge of medical, diagnostic, and procedural terminology with an advanced understanding of oncology disease processes and anatomy and physiology.
- Demonstrated management experience and/or skills supervising, maintaining, and developing clinical research staff within the study team, and acting as a mentor for professional staff and conducting reviews and performance evaluations.
- Demonstrates excellent problem-solving and analytical skills to addresses complex or new problems; quickly evaluating complex issues and identify multiple options for resolution.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with technical writing skills sufficient to compose a variety of scientific documents, reports, budgets, and justifications which are clear, concise, logical and display syntax and grammar.
- Strong communicator; includes verbal and written, active listening, critical thinking, persuasiveness, advising and counseling skills.
- Knowledgeable of University personnel and labor policies, financial systems, research process, contracts, and grants, etc.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Business or Healthcare field or equivalent experience.
- Experience managing finances for oncology-specific trials.
- Experience negotiating contracts and budgets with both industry and federal sponsors.
- Experience working in OnCore Clinical Trials Management System (CTMS).
- Familiarity with Cancer Center Support Grant guidelines.
- Complete knowledge of University accounting and finance principles, practices and procedures.
- Complete knowledge of University of California contracts and grants accounting and management principles and procedures.
- Skills working in a multidisciplinary matrixed work environment.

Department Overview
The UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center (UCDCCC) is a campus-wide multidisciplinary matrix organization whose mission is to reduce the burden of cancer among the diverse populations in our community and beyond through bidirectional engagement and transdisciplinary collaborations that enhance our understanding of cancer, inform new ways to prevent and treat cancer, and prepares a committed and inclusive workforce. The Office of Clinical Research (OCR) is the centralized office for clinical research operations within UCDCCC. The OCR services support the entire lifecycle of cancer-related clinical research protocols. These include support for development and implementation of clinical trials, quality control of clinical research operations, and training and education services.
