What You Will Do
The Gas Transfers Systems (Q-7) Group is seeking a Deputy Group Leader (DGL). You will team with the Q-7 Group Leader and the Q-7 Chief Engineer to plan technical activities and provide strong team and personnel leadership. This teaming will include operational activities within all laboratory environments and facilities associated with gas transfer system-related research and development, design, qualification, production and surveillance.

You will work with the Q-7 Group Leader and other Q Division Leadership (e.g. Division Leader, Deputy Division Leader and other Q-Division managers) to develop and foster effective teams across the group and division in such areas as: operational planning, strategic planning, program implementation, co-execution of weapons development projects and deliverables.

You will aid the Group Leader in managing Environmental Safety & Health (ES&H), security, recruiting, staffing, performance appraisals, employee development, resolving personnel issues and salary management for the group as necessary.

You will bring an understanding of Gas Transfer Systems (GTS) technology and its complex-wide role in nuclear weapons stockpile stewardship. You will provide engineering expertise within the group and general LANL customers and will work with the team to assist in fulfillment of gas transfer mission objectives as listed above and as deemed necessary.

As the Q-7 Deputy Group Leader, you will need:

Leadership Skills

Demonstrated successful leadership of technical projects and personnel. Demonstrated experience with utilizing management principles, resource planning tools, and budget management. Excellent written and oral interpersonal communication skills. Demonstrated successful teamwork and consensus building consistent with appropriate delegation. Recognition of others with the ability to team, collaborate, or integrate across program lines to accomplish larger program goals.

Technical Competence

Fundamental knowledge of nuclear weapons and the U.S. stockpile.Familiarity of design agency and production agency roles.Familiarity with experimental test design and/or assembly and manufacturing methods and techniques.

Represent the Laboratory to internal or external agencies in defined capacities as necessary.


What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Technical expertise and knowledge gas transfer system technology, tritium science and related engineering practices.
  • Demonstrated experience developing new methods, techniques, capabilities, or approaches to address critical operational, personnel, and/or technical challenges.
  • Demonstrated experience developing diverse and collaborative teams and provide oversight and leadership of technical projects and multidisciplinary problems.
  • Demonstrated experience providing guidance and leadership in the development and execution of integrated work management (IWM) processes (e.g. IWDs, TPs, etc.).
  • Demonstrated experience in understanding and communicating requirements for working in facilities with radioactive and high pressure hazards, such as a Hazard Category 2 nuclear facility.
  • Demonstrated experience identifying and/or addressing areas for improved operational efficiency.
  • Ensure management oversight in the absence of the Q-7 GL.

Education/Experience : Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with Los Alamos National Laboratory weapons research and programmatic activities.
  • Experience with weapon component design, fabrication and assembly techniques, as well as advanced fabrication processes.
  • Demonstrated experience with nuclear weapon configuration management and product definition including 3D models, drawings, specifications and Engineering Authorizations (EAs).
  • Knowledge of GTS hardware and experimental or test design methodologies.
  • Familiarity with LANL IWM process (e.g. IWDs, TPs, etc.) and principles of Conduct of Operations.
  • Experience working with a nuclear facility.
Work Environment:

Work Location : The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations areat the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year .

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearancerequires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances.Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances.See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in aneligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligibleposition as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
