Position Summary
Reporting to the Associate Director and Chief Engineer, the Foreperson is responsible for repairing all water and steam conveyance systems and related components across the University. This includes coordinating and overseeing repairs by other departments as outlined by preventative maintenance schedules, work orders, and direction from the associate director. Key duties involve repairing plumbing, pumps, and steam fixtures, while secondary responsibilities include operating, maintaining, and repairing mechanical systems and equipment on the LC campus. The schedule is Monday through Friday, 6:00 am to 2:30 pm. This position is on-call for emergencies.
Essential Functions
- Ensures the start-up of the HVAC power plant and ancillary pumping equipment and coordinates efforts to provide smooth operation.
- Interacts with service providers and report the delivery of contracted repairs and installations to management.
- Provides timely inventory reporting for all departmental needs in relation to mechanical, water, and steam equipment maintenance and repair.
- Carries out facility inspections, identifies problems, notifies management, and effects timely repairs personally or through direction to others.
- Participates and follows up on executed repairs and preventative maintenance activities and provides management with details.
- Provides follow-up on electrical maintenance activities and repairs and reports to supervision regarding safety and equipment operation.
- Coordinates annual tasks to prepare all power plants for summer and winter operations.
- Ensures mechanical/electrical equipment areas are in order and free from hazardous waste, debris, and other housekeeping problems.
- Utilizes assorted hand and power tools, gauges, multimeters, etc.
- Performs other related physical plant duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications: Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Trade School Certificate is preferred in plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry or general construction trades.
- Valid Driver’s License required.
- Minimum of ten years experience in a similar position/environment/field supervising multiple trades.
- The candidate must possess or obtain the following FDNY Certificates of Fitness before completing their probationary period. Additionally, other certificates of fitness may be required to meet the position’s duties. Certificates must be maintained throughout the course of employment.
- (F-01) City-wide Fire Guard for Impairment
- (F-60) Fire Guard for Torch Operations
- (G-60) Torch Use of Flammable Gases for Hot Work Operations
- (E-21) Using Powder Actuated Tools
- Failure to obtain the required Certificates of Fitness will result in the termination of the employee’s employment.
Required Qualifications: Knowledge and Skills
- Extensive knowledge of facility maintenance techniques and trades.
- Sound knowledge of HVAC equipment operation and repair. Must be conversant with all phases of construction.
- Must know how to use and operate power tools, gauges, computers, ladders and other tools and equipment typical to this position.
- Successful candidates should have a knowledge of and commitment to the goals of Jesuit Education

- Major emphasis on overseeing different trades, preferably from a supervisory or GC perspective.
