Position Description:

This is a temporary fulltime position anticipated up to 6 months supporting the Engineering Drafting sub-team.

This Drafting Engineer will support the NASA Space Launch System (SLS) Hardware-in-the-Loop (HWIL) labs, and System Emulator equipment from Marshall Space Flight center in Huntsville Alabama. The HWIL labs include the System Integration and Test Facility (SITF), Systems Integration Laboratory (SIL), and multiple Software Development Facilities (SDFs) used to verify the integrated avionics and software systems for the SLS rocket. Collectively these labs are known as the Integrated Avionics Test Facilities (IATF). The System Emulators replicate key system level functions and functional interfaces for NASA manned space flight systems integration activities in various locations across the United States. All of these labs and emulators include numerous complex real-time Software Models integrated with Electrical/Avionics systems to achieve detailed simulation of the SLS rocket.

Work will be performed for the Avionics and Ground Systems Test Branch (ES53) of the SLS program at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. This branch is responsible for maintenance, fabrication, integration, operation, assembly, and testing of project hardware and software in support of the noted SLS labs and system emulators.

Responsibilities:

This position's primary responsibilities include:

  • Generate 2D/3D models of parts and assemblies to ensure well-documented lab design.
  • Create, check and maintain design documentation for engineering labs. This includes preliminary conceptual design evolving to released design drawings. Interpret engineering models and drawings.

    • Design documentation drawings include (but not limited to) 1) Structures for mounting electrical/electronic equipment, 2) computer equipment assemblies, 3) Cable Interconnect drawings, 4) 19" rack layout drawings
  • Prepare engineering product definition in accordance with ASME Y14.100 and related standards.
  • Receive and implement redline changes to existing engineering drawings
  • Ensure part masters and bill of material attributes are accurate and up-to-date
  • Working with Configuration Management to release updated engineering drawings into the as-designed lab configuration system
  • Working with associated Systems Engineering (SE), Lab Operations, and Facility Architecture teams to ensure responsive support to design needs
  • Other responsibilities may be assigned as needed

These activities will be ongoing as the SLS program completes program phases, reviews and schedule milestones, and as the SLS Launch Vehicle architecture evolves.

Degree in Engineering, or related field is required. Degree from an ABET-accredited university is preferred. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a minimum of a Masters with at least 3 years of experience, or BS with at least 5 years of experience.

Requirements and Required Skills:

  • Minimum of 8 years professional experience
  • Proficient in 2D/3D CAD design, specifically the CREO 3D CAD application
  • Strong written and oral technical communication skills - must be able to clearly define and describe a technical subject to peers across various engineering disciplines.
  • Strong task organization skills - ability to self-manage multiple tasks competing for time and attention, and achieve need dates for all assigned tasks
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to perform all above identified Primary Responsibilities

Desired experience includes one or more of the following in order of significance:

  • Knowledge of, and experience performing all above identified Primary Responsibilities
  • Strong knowledge of engineering drawing standards and ability to use these standards in practice. Engineering drawing standards include:
    • ASME Y14.24 - Types and Applications of Engineering Drawings
    • ASME Y14.100 - Engineering Drawing Practices
  • Configuration management of large systems
  • Avionics Systems design, integration & test. Know how to read and interpret avionics architecture diagrams, cable interconnect diagrams, and associated system schematics.

Essential Functions

Work Environment:

General office environment (100%). Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (< 15%)

Physical Requirements:

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Amentum facilities (10%).

Equipment and Machines:

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance:

Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions:

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
