The University of Michigan Food Allergy Center is seeking a Research Lab Specialist. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to systematically process samples from a newly founded food allergy-focused human birth cohort and test for food allergies better understand food anaphylaxis. This position offers unique opportunities for a motivated individual to work closely with the principal investigator and laboratory members in a highly collegial translational science laboratory.

Primary responsibilities

  • Systematically process human samples, including blood, stool, placenta tissue and breastmilk.
  • Perform bench work with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Maintain high integrity in all aspects of the job.
  • Accurately enter sample information into our data management system (LabVantage).
  • Learn operation of Phadia 250 to take measurements of human IgE for food allergy screening.
  • Assist supervisor with editing SOPs and QuickStart guides for lab protocols and equipment.
  • Work independently but seek help when needed.
  • Work closely with PIs and supervisor to help ensure a smoothly running project.
  • Work with our collaborating teams across the university to address problems that arise.
  • Assist with creating figures for presentations.
  • Assist clinical coordinators with sample coordination.
  • Attend meetings as required.
  • Must be willing to perform rotating on-call duties.
  • Must be able to use a microscope.
  • Assist with general chores, including reagent preparation and general lab maintenance duties.

The ideal candidate will have experience in human blood processing, maintaining laboratory data and a willingness to work with our team in a highly collaborative science environment. This candidate must be able to work independently, follow directions and ask for help when needed. Excellent communication skills (written and oral) and attention to detail are required. Basic cellular and molecular biology techniques including qPCR, protein expression and purification, and immunological techniques such as ELISA and flow cytometry are a plus.
  • Bachelor?s degree.
  • Prior experience with blood and/or tissue.
  • Wet lab experience.
  • Agreement to rotating on-call duties
  • Must be able to use a microscope

  • Experience working with human models for in vivo studies (including techniques such as immunization or allergen sensitization, blood and tissue collection, blood and tissue processing).
  • Strong interest in research and learning new techniques under guidance by the PI and other lab personnel.
  • Experience working with a LIMS database
