The Residency Classification Team in the Office of the Registrar on the Ann Arbor campus is charged with determining the residency of current and prospective students for all three University of Michigan campuses.
Reporting to the Associate Registrar for Student Services, the Assistant Registrar for residency will manage the process by which in-state tuition decisions are made for all three campuses of the University of Michigan, interpret and apply the university's Guidelines for Qualifying for In-State Tuition under the three available pathways for demonstrating eligibility for in-state tuition, and render final decisions in compliance with these Guidelines.
The Assistant Registrar currently oversees a team of four and is responsible for staff including hiring, training, evaluation, and professional development.
- Establish and oversee policies and procedures for the residency classification team.
- Lead residency classification team in all areas including performing internal audits of residency statuses, providing assistance to students and families, working with the U-M Dearborn and Flint campuses to resolve in-state tuition inquiries, managing the residency appeals and responding to requests from campus partners.
- Monitor and manage workflow queues, make adjustments to align with other university policies and practices. Review applications for in-state tuition, document recommendations and final decisions.
- Collaborate with university partners and offices to resolve in-state tuition inquiries and clarify process and policies; provide training and continuing support to admissions staff to ensure consistent application of in-state tuition policy and procedures.
- Identify and implement procedural and operational practices to facilitate the efficient flow of application review; identify and initiate business process improvements and make recommendations to improve the application experience for all campuses.
- Work with Information Technology Services to ensure optimum functionality and performance of the in-state tuition application; initiate updates and changes to enhance application experience.
- Facilitate data collection using various tools including internal audits, Team Dynamix and Zoom phones; track team performance and trends.
- Monitor and update residency information on websites and other university publications.
- Bachelor's degree.
- Four years of progressively responsible administrative experience, preferably within a post-secondary, accredited institution.
- Successful supervisory experience.
- Exceptional interpersonal and customer service skills, with a demonstrated ability to interact positively with diverse constituencies.
- Demonstrated competence in oral and written communications.
- Strong technical aptitude and computer software (MS Office) skills.
- Project management experience. Ability to reimagine processes, develop and implement procedures related to business process improvements.
- Familiarity with Oracle PeopleSoft or other large-scale student information systems
- Understanding of post-secondary education policies and procedures regarding enrollment, admissions, and/or tuition.
