THIS JOB OPENING IS BEING USED TO FILL CURRENT AND FUTURE VACANT POSITIONS IN THIS CLASSIFICATION AT VARIOUS SHIFTS, LOCATIONS AND ASSIGNED DAYS OFF

ORDER OF PREFERENCE: The selection for Maintenance and Construction is made on the basis of fitness and ability with preference given to: Maintenance and Construction District, System-Wide (L689), Authority-Wide and external candidates, respectively.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or (GED) and vocational or technical training in Graphic Arts/Silk Screening Program

Experience

Twelve (12) months following the achievement of a particular grade level (i.e., Grades D, C, B, A and AA), an incumbent may be advanced to the next grade level provided he/she has taken and passed any required written or practical tests, acquired any required certifications and has met acceptable fitness for duty, work record and job performance requirements.
  • Level D
    • A minimum of two (2) years to have performed satisfactorily the duties of a Graphics Mechanic, or related experience
  • Level C
    • A minimum of three (3) years to have performed satisfactorily the duties of a Graphics Mechanic, or related experience
  • Level B
    • A minimum of four (4) years to have performed satisfactorily the duties of a Graphics Mechanic, or related experience
  • Level A
    • A minimum of five (5) years to have performed satisfactorily the duties of a Graphics Mechanic, or related experience
  • Level AA
    • A minimum of six (6) years to have performed satisfactorily the duties of a Graphics Mechanic, or related experience

Certification/Licensure
  • Possession of or ability to rapidly obtain and maintain a valid motor vehicle operators permit from jurisdiction of residence

Mission Essential Designation:
  • In accordance with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authoritys Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) this job has been identified as critical to mission essential functions. Incumbents in this role may be required to report to or continue to work in the event of authorized office closings or service suspensions due to severe weather, natural disaster, fire, operational emergencies or related events.

Job Summary

The Graphics Mechanic is skilled in graphic art and silk screening work requiring the ability to create a variety of different types of concepts, design logos, packaging, decals, signs and posters for the promotion of goods, services, and ideas. The incumbent reviews requirements for design, analyzes the purpose of the project, and develops design ideas. Employee prepares sketches, diagrams layout and develops production methods using specific equipment. The Graphics Mechanic also prepares cost and material analyses.

Job levels: At each successive grade level of this job (i.e., Grades D, C. B, A, and AA), the incumbent is expected to demonstrate increased, distinguishing levels of proficiency and efficiency in knowledge, skills and abilities when performing the assigned duties and essential functions described in this job description.

Essential Functions
  • Uses computer-aided design programs to determine design specifics and produce signs, decals and posters for the purpose of providing adequate signage for WMATA vehicles.
  • Performs silk screening to produce various styles and types of signs, decals, and other related logos.
  • Organizes work request, determines methods, techniques, and materials needed to effectively accomplish assignments.
  • Prepares written materials (e.g., repair and maintenance logs, parts lists, warranty claims) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference and meeting mandated requirements.
  • Responds to and provides assistance in emergencies such as securing or safeguarding WMATA vehicles and equipment, fire/life/safety and snow emergencies to ensure safety and reliability of parts and equipment.
  • Operates Authority vehicles as required.
