Marketing Statement:

Metro (WMATA) is seeking results-driven candidate to join as a Safety and Risk Program Specialist within the Office of Safety Risk Management. This Safety and Risk Program Specialist will play a critical role in the success of Metros Safety Management System by supporting the Safety Risk Management process through the organizations vast network of 14+ Safety Risk Coordinators and 37+ Safety Committees. This role will support these critical safety resources to help address Metros most pressing risks, drive continuous improvement efforts, and mature Metros Safety Management System. The right candidate is a highly organized, proactive problem solver with excellent written and oral communication skills.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Bachelors Degree in Occupational Safety, System Safety Engineering, Safety Management, Quality Management, or a related field.
    • In lieu of a Bachelors degree, a high school diploma/GED and four (4) years of relevant work experience in an operations, maintenance or safety-related field, in addition to the experience stated below, will be considered

Experience
  • A minimum of four (4) years of experience supporting the management of safety risks in high reliability operations.

Certification/Licensure
  • N/A

Preferred
  • Transit Safety and Security Program (TSSP) Certification
  • Experience with ISO Quality Management Systems
  • Lean Six Sigma Certification
  • Masters Degree in Systems Engineering, Safety Management, or related field of study

SUMMARY

Working closely with management, the Safety Risk Management Program Specialist implements the Safety Risk Management component of WMATAs Safety Management System (SMS). The incumbent develops user friendly processes; supports implementation through training, coaching, and mentoring; facilitates Local Safety Committees, measuring effectiveness with metrics based on key performance indicators; and collects feedback that is used to drive continuous improvement. Additionally, the incumbent delivers regular reports that provide a clear picture of top safety risks, the actions being taken in response, and whether these actions are working as intended through metrics, which serve to inform decision making by management and frontline supervision. The incumbent also collaborates among a network of Safety Risk Coordinators, enabling a smooth flow of safety risk information throughout the organization.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Contributes to the development and implementation of the Safety Risk Management process, using industry best practices such as MIL-STD-882E System Safety Standard Practice to proactively identify, assess, and mitigate safety risks in accordance with WMATAs Agency Safety Plan.
  • Supports the development of Key Performance Indicators and metrics associated with Metro safety performance to measure the effectiveness of Safety Risk Management and enable data driven actions that result in continuous improvement.
  • Facilitates Local Safety Committees that ensure leadership have the information needed to make informed decisions and to ensure that resources are allocated in a manner that maximizes value in the form of reducing safety risk as low as reasonably practicable.
  • Partners with management to foster a culture where employees are comfortable reporting safety concerns, which are then captured, analyzed, and dispositioned in a manner that is formalized and transparent.
