Job Summary

The Center for Hellenic Studies and its library are actively expanding their activities to include digitization of rare materials, text mining and other digital humanities activities such as open data initiatives, in addition to programming, and collection development. We are also managing many tasks within the integrated library system ALMA which this position would oversee for the CHS and together with local and Cambridge IT services analyze and manage changing and evolving technologies. The library is further poised to engage in community outreach efforts through various kinds of programming, and to expand the physical and digital collection in places and deepen it in other areas, in which this position would take an active role. These added and expanded efforts require an individual dedicated to often complex and challenging responsibilities.

Position Description

Serves as the onsite ALMA specialist and CHS ALMA liaison with Harvard University and IT in Cambridge, and with the Dumbarton Oaks Library; advises on optimal workflows; follows updates to ALMA, OCLC, and related systems; in coordination with the cataloger, performs cataloging and updates of especially digital resources; runs analytics and circulation reports in ALMA in coordination with the chief librarian and CHS and Cambridge IT teams. Maintains the repository of CHS generated content: maintains collections of physical and digital media generated by CHS including images and video; maintains collections of CHS data and contributes to open data initiatives; coordinates with the chief librarian and IT teams to manage resources; facilitates access and usage of CHS generated content; in coordination with the chief librarian and IT, analyzes needs for and advises on new systems; develops documentation for current procedures.

Coordinates with the chief librarian in developing and managing the collection in all formats. Assesses physical and digital library spaces and makes recommendations to allow for growth and expansion.

Follows metadata and open data standards; contributes to documentation for CHS generated content, digital humanities projects, and open data projects; advises the library team, publication team, programs team, and individual fellows on best practices; assists patrons with using CHS generated content and external e-resources; together with the chief librarian develops and maintains a library web and social media presence; registers URNs and creates cataloging records for CHS generated content in coordination with the CHS cataloger and technical services teams in Cambridge.

Coordinates with the chief librarian and programming staff, but also with possible other local, national, and international institutions on developing community engagement and outreach activities within in-person and hybrid environments such as physical and virtual exhibitions, conferences, workshops, round tables, lectures, poetry readings, music performances, internships, etc.

Participates in local, national, and international conferences and other meetings related to the position and keeps abreast of research in IT and data systems, digital scholarship, and digital classics.

Basic Qualifications

  • An ALA-accredited ML(I)S or equivalent internationally accredited program.
  • Three-years of experience with digital humanities scholarship.
  • Three-years of experience with organizing and leading programming especially in academic and research institutions, libraries, archives, or museums.

Additional Qualifications and Skills
  • Strong information and digital literacy skills.
  • Familiarity with research methodologies including emerging tools and technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate, plan and carry out projects independently and as a team member; flexibility, and willingness to assume various assignments.
  • Open to experiment with and improvise new ways of approaching processes, tasks or problems.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to recognize, respect and work effectively with individuals and groups with diverse perspectives and backgrounds.
  • A solid understanding of the research process and how new tools and technologies affect the production, dissemination and reception of research in the humanities.
  • Familiarity with bibliographic management tools at academic institutions.
  • Academic background in classics or Hellenic studies and relevant experience in digital scholarship.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively to advance research projects.
