Employment Type: Permanent Faculty

Vacancy ID: FAC0005487

Salary Range: Salary Commensurate with Education and Experience

Position Summary/Description:

The School of Medicine of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks an accomplished and visionary leader to serve as Chair for the Department of Psychiatry.

The Department's vision is to: support and accelerate the research engine by supporting and recruiting the best and brightest investigators, to recruit and train the next generation of psychiatrists whose interest span the broad swath of psychiatry today, and what psychiatry will become tomorrow, and to transform clinical medicine into patient-centered care, with the highest standards of quality, compassion and cost-consciousness.

The Department is comprised of 414 faculty, 259 adjunct faculty, 10 advanced practice providers, 75 residents, 10 fellows and 174 staff organized across multiple divisions and programs, and specialized internal clinical research units. In addition to its internal research units, the department works in partnership with leading research centers at UNC including the Bowles Center for Alcohol Studies, the Carolina Institute for Developmental Disabilities, the Neuroscience Center, the Biomedical Research Imaging Center, the Carolina Center for Genome Sciences, TEACCH Autism Program, and the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Our clinical programs, based in Chapel Hill, serve patients across the state. Our expert clinicians treat individuals with complex psychiatric conditions across all ages, specializing in areas such as schizophrenia, neurostimulation, eating disorders, reproductive mood disorders, anxiety and mood disorders, autism, neurodevelopmental disorders, geriatric psychiatry, and addiction medicine.

The department has created innovative care models, including a strong telepsychiatry service and integrated care. Currently, 60% of our outpatient psychiatry is virtual. We also offer a large psychiatric consultation service to UNC Health emergency departments statewide and have launched a successful virtual inpatient psychiatry unit, with plans for expansion.

Training the next generation is a top priority. We have a renowned general psychiatry residency training program, that is one of the largest in the country, and have successful ACGME fellowships in all areas: Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, Addiction Medicine, Forensic Psychiatry, and Geriatric Psychiatry. There is also a large psychology internship program, and a substantial presence of post-doctoral research fellows.

Psychiatry's faculty are accomplished researchers, securing $40M in annual funding of a diverse research portfolio, and consistently a top-ranked, externally funded research department. Twenty percent of faculty are supported by $98M from the NIH . Through its three T32 research fellowship training programs, its novel physician scientist training program, and its robust K writing support group, the Department is committed to training and mentorship of the next generation to realize tomorrow's discoveries.

Since its founding in 1952, research has been central to the Department of Psychiatry. Today, the department has a robust research infrastructure, including the Mental Health Informatics and Analytics Core and Neuroimaging Core, and leads the North Carolina Psychiatric Research Center in Raleigh. It is home to renowned programs in women's mood disorders, schizophrenia, eating disorders, neurostimulation, PTSD , and more. Expanding clinical trials is a key research priority.

This recruitment is Open Track/Open Rank, and the appropriate track and rank will be determined once the top candidate is selected. In addition to a primary faculty appointment in the Department of Psychiatry, the selected candidate will hold a secondary EHRA Non-Faculty administrative appointment as Department Chair.
