Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a contractor to the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA).
Applied and Fundamental Physics (P-2) is a diverse group of experimental physicists, engineers, technicians, and students engaged in a range of fundamental and applied research in nuclear physics beyond the Standard Model, neutrinos, dark matter, weapons physics, plasma physics, and fluid dynamics.
The Advanced Diagnostics Design and Integration (ADDI) focuses on the development and application of diagnostics and methodologies providing the technical basis for the understanding, design, characterization, and certification of our current and future stockpile. Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a contractor to the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA).
The ADDI team (P-2) at LANL, is searching for exceptional candidates for a multi-disciplined diagnostic scientist position.
Scientist 2 ($104,100-$172,200)
As a member of this team, the selected Scientist 2 will support efforts to understand materials behavior under extreme conditions of temperature and pressure using multiple diagnostic techniques. Responsibilities will include assisting the writing and reviewing of technical requirements, support designing systems and procedures which satisfying those requirements, and coordinating activities with other researchers at LANL and across the NNSA complex. This position demands technical leadership experience and close collaborative teamwork with interdisciplinary scientists, engineers, technicians and technologists.
Scientist 3 ($125,200-$211,300)
Beyond the Scientist 2 level, you will lead the development and design of diagnostics, will coordinate the deployment of diagnostics, lead data analysis, and author technical documents for experiments across the NNSA Complex. It is expected the applicant has prior experiences performing these duties which are documented in publications and presentations.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Scientist 2:
- Significant knowledge and experience in at least one of the following:
- Shock physics
- Optical physics or diagnostics
- Highspeed imaging
- Significant experience developing diagnostic (optical) systems, fielding, and analyzing data for one of the following:
- High Speed Imaging (HSI)
- Time-of-arrival diagnostics (TOAD, optical Doppler frequency shifting)
- Photonic Doppler Velocimetry (PDV, optical Doppler frequency shifting)
- Broadband Laser Ranging (BLR, laser pulse interference)
- Optical Scattering, resonance phenomena, and nonlinear optics
- Expertise in the design, fielding, and analysis of experiments.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills as evidenced by a record of research publication and presentations.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance (U.S. citizenship required).
- Willingness to travel.
In addition, the previous, a Scientist 3 is expected to have the following:
- Thorough knowledge and proven experience in leading diagnostic system development, fielding, and analysis.
- Demonstrated technical leadership and experience supervising or mentoring staff.
Education/Experience Level 3: Position requires a Master's degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 6 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
- Strong programming skills in python, C++, Jlia, MATLAB, or similar.
- Experience with multi-diagnostic experiments within the NNSA Complex; National Laboratories; or SCE programs.
- Experience in laboratory safety: ex. Laser, Electrical, Radiation, etc.
- A Ph.D. in Physics, Engineering or closely related field from an accredited institution strongly preferred.
- Active DOE Q Clearance

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
Clearance: Q(Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearancerequires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances.Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances.See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information .
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
