What You Will Do
The Metrology Program and Calibration Laboratory is looking for an early/mid-career Quality Engineer with experience implementing ISO/IEC 17025 requirements in a calibration laboratory setting. As the successful candidate you will lead the Physical metrology laboratory with the responsibilities of assuring metrology operations meet ISO/IEC 17025 requirements, providing technical and quality mentoring to metrology staff, driving improvements and assisting with increasing calibration capabilities, and collaborating with senior metrology staff, engineers, and management to support organizational goals.

The Metrology Quality Engineer will have advanced experience in implementing an ISO/IEC 17025 compliant quality program in a metrology laboratory environment. The successful candidate will have advanced knowledge of metrology principles, concepts, and theories and the demonstrated ability to integrate the technical knowledge within quality requirements. You will be responsible for assuring quality requirements are implemented, managing workload, mentoring staff, and initiating/supporting continuous improvement activities to support effective, efficient, and compliant operations. The ability to mentor and work collaboratively is essential.
This position will be filled at either the Engineer 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Metrology Engineer 2 ($94,500 - $154,600)
You will apply your advanced knowledge of ISO/IEC 17025 calibration laboratory requirements to include metrology quality and technical metrology principles, theories, concepts and techniques to lead calibration operations in the Physical metrology laboratory. Provide mentoring to assure seamless integration and application of quality and technical requirements. Assure effective workload management to meet or exceed customer needs. Recommend compliant solutions to complex calibration operational challenges necessary to provide excellent customer service. Collaboratively support engineering activities to assure metrology operations, capabilities, and capacities in the metrology laboratory.
Metrology Engineer 3 ($104,100 - $172,200)
At this level, the incumbent will have advanced expertise in Physical metrology with expert-level knowledge of ISO/IEC 17025 requirements. The ability to independently lead quality activities such as Proficiency Testing, Inter-Laboratory Comparisons, Accreditation Body (AB) audit preparation, and metrology quality management system implementation that assures compliance with technical requirements.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Advanced knowledge and experience implementing ISO/IEC 17025 requirements in a calibration laboratory environment;
- Demonstrated experience performing simple-to-complex or unique one-of-a-kind calibrations;
- Demonstrated ability to develop and manage calibration procedures and uncertainty budgets in accordance with technical and quality requirements; and
- Knowledge of metrology quality assurance and metrology principles and concepts.
- Knowledge of calibration system/equipment operations and maintenance, metrology calculations, applications of engineering methods to physical measurements.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE "Q" Clearance, which normally requires U.S. Citizenship
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
- Experience with the implementation of a new calibration system (from installation to bench operability activities and training of staff);
- Demonstrated experience in providing solutions to a diverse range of calibration challenges using engineering principles, concepts, and calculations.
- Experience preparing calibration operations for ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation audits;
- Expert knowledge of metrology quality assurance and metrology principles and concepts; and
- Advanced experience mentoring less experienced staff.
Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, QE or Industrial Systems Engineering or a related field and 8 year of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
- Knowledge of IndySoft Laboratory Information Management System
- Experience preparing for ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation and/or implementing an ISO/IEC 17025 calibration laboratory quality program.
- Demonstrated participation in ISO/IEC 17025 assessments as an Assessor / Lead Assessor
- Ability to go on occasional domestic travel.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level).
