The Mankin & Vasquez-Laslop lab studies molecular mechanisms of protein synthesis. We are investigating how the ribosome, the most ancient and sophisticated molecular machine of the cell, makes proteins, how translation factors help it in this endeavor, and how antibiotics prevent it from doing its job. We are also engineering the ribosome to enable new functions and getting insights in its origin and evolution.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Keep accurate records of the experiments suitable for writing manuscripts and grant proposals.
  • Present the results at scientific meetings.
  • Participate in weekly lab meetings, Journal Clubs and common seminars within the Department.
  • Carry out biochemical and microbiological experiments related to the mechanisms of antibiotic action and mechanisms of protein synthesis in bacteria.
  • Gene cloning and mutagenesis.
  • Protein isolation.
  • Analysis of RNA and DNA.
  • Experiments might involve working with small amounts of radioactive materials or moderately pathogenic bacteria.
  • Fulfill some lab maintenance duties, including ordering supplies and reagents, maintenance of the compliance with the safety regulations, and other duties as assigned.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


  • Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in science or related field required.
    • A minimum of 3 years of related research experience.
    • Possesses and applies comprehensive knowledge of research principles, concepts, practices, and methods.
    • Proficient in specific lab research techniques.


    Preferred Qualifications
    • Master's degree in Science, Biology, Biochemistry, or Microbiology preferred.
    • Previous experience with lab work.
    • Protein and DNA/RNA handling experience is preferred.
    • Previous experience with gene cloning.
    • Previous experience with DNA and/or RNA analysis, including gel electrophoresis.
    • Prior research lab experience outside of coursework is preferred.
