Research and Development Engineer (RSCH AND DEV ENGR 3 TX) Job Summary #CA-PS Under direction, the incumbent will independently conduct research and prototype development projects requiring expertise in the design, simulation, and fabrication of mechanical and medical/surgical devices. This includes integrating systems and components such as circuits, signals, and software controls. The incumbent will support the director of the facilities and, as time permits, assist with coursework associated with facility operations. The role also involves developing and delivering online prototyping training modules for students, faculty, and staff. The incumbent serves as a key expert in designing medical and research devices, providing consultation to outside clientele, campus researchers, and Principal Investigators. Responsibilities include maintaining and overseeing advanced prototyping equipment, ensuring compliance with lab safety practices, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to refine prototypes, troubleshoot issues, and meet project objectives. Additionally, this position involves leading promotional activities to elevate the public's perception of the lab and its offerings. The incumbent will manage social media content, engage with the broader community, and develop outreach initiatives that highlight ongoing research, project milestones, and collaborative achievements, ultimately expanding the lab's visibility and impact. The position can be filled prior to the removal date Qualifications Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience in mechanical engineering. At least three years of progressive experience and training in the areas of mechanical engineering, engineering design, and control systems; Expertise in design, simulation and advanced fabrication (3D printing, etc) of medical device/surgical instrumentation mechanical system components. Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills to communicate effectively with all levels of faculty, staff, and students. Ability to develop pre-surgical planning replicas. Skills to use computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Outlook. Excellent organizational skills to achieve timely progress on multiple simultaneous tasks, distribute effort appropriately among tasks. Preferred Qualifications Experience with CAD (Autodesk inventor, Solidworks, Fusion360), CAM, Arduino/Microcontrollers. Experience with mechanical components design and fabrication. Experience with 3D printing. Knowledge of UC policies and departmental operating procedures. Currently, TEAM consists of a single location in Davis with a second location planned as an anchor tenant of Aggie Square, a planned innovation district on UC Davis' Sacramento campus. Opening in 2025, Aggie Square will be home to research programs, private industry, classrooms, housing, and public-facing programs that engage local communities and entrepreneurs. Aggie Square is adjacent to the UC Davis Medical Center that is the region's only level 1 trauma center north of San Francisco. It serves as a hub of innovation focused on discovering and sharing knowledge while providing the highest quality of patient care. The TEAM lab is a core device development facility with a mission to support research, innovation, and instructional support in the medical domain and beyond. The lab's engineering expertise and state-of-the-art equipment are uniquely tuned for the demands of the medical field and its applications. The Aggie Square Sacramento facility will be a technology design and development center with over 8,000 square-feet. TEAM at Aggie Square will be equipped with advanced technologies including 3D printing, CNC (Computer Numerical Control) subtractive manufacturing technologies, and Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality (AR/VR) facilities and services. It will expand services to UC Davis Health programs including 3D PrintViz, clinical applications, the basic science research community, start-up companies, health care professionals. It will also support multi-disciplinary training and education of future innovators including engineers, health professionals, technology companies and aspiring youth.
