UMBC is seeking an exceptional leader to serve as the Vice President for Institutional Advancement (VP). This critical leadership role offers a unique opportunity to shape and drive the strategic vision of the Office of Institutional Advancement, influencing the future of UMBC through impactful fundraising, alumni engagement, and innovative operational excellence.

Responsibilities:
Reporting directly to the UMBC President, the VP will develop and execute strategies to enhance the advancement enterprise, fostering a collaborative and inclusive culture. As a member of the President's senior leadership team, the VP will enhance UMBC's reputation through sophisticated marketing strategies, expand the University's research portfolio, and support athletic programs through targeted fundraising efforts.

The following are the essential duties and responsibilities of this role:

  • In partnership with the President and senior leadership, assess the effectiveness of the development enterprise.
  • Lead the Advancement team to attract the maximum philanthropic support possible on behalf of the institution.
  • Foster a working environment that values diverse thinking and approaches, rewards new ideas and innovation, provides professional development, and maintains an inclusive and welcoming culture.
  • Using contemporary analytics, develop and implement performance metrics and assessment tools for data-informed risk-taking in the Advancement office.
  • Provide leadership for the ongoing execution of UMBC's annual fundraising and any campaigns, developing an annual integrated fundraising strategy aligned with University priorities.
  • Personally cultivate, solicit, and steward a select portfolio of highest-level prospects.
  • Plan and carefully manage the development budget, ensuring that resources are deployed efficiently and effectively with fundraising goals and objectives at the forefront.
  • Build strong personal and professional collaborative relationships with the entire University community and represent UMBC at off-campus and public events.

Required Minimum Qualifications:
This role requires a leader with a proven track record of success in fundraising and campaigns who possesses exemplary interpersonal and managerial leadership skills with experience addressing organizational change. The ideal candidate will bring a strategic mindset, innovative thinking, a dedication to excellence, and a desire to make a significant impact.

Required Qualifications:
  • Ten-plus years of fundraising and managerial leadership experience demonstrating progressively increasing responsibility in a higher education advancement program.
  • Flexibility to travel and work evenings or weekends.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent education.
Preferred Qualifications:
The preferred candidate will possess many of the following:
  • Knowledge of best practices in all key areas of fundraising and strategic planning as a member of a senior leadership team.
  • Demonstrated track record of success in a complex organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, manage, and successfully lead a campaign.
  • Proven management skills and experience establishing a team- and goal-oriented culture.
  • Exemplary interpersonal and listening skills; impeccable attention to detail and superb follow-through; strong personal integrity, flexibility, and work ethic.
  • Proven track record of success in personally cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major and principal gifts from individual and institutional donors.
  • Demonstrated talent in developing and implementing strategies, plans, and budgets in a complex, fast-changing environment.
  • Unflappable in the face of multiple challenges, highly motivated, and possessing a disciplined work ethic, a competitive nature, a creative approach, and a proven ability to lead.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

Salary:
Salary: $300,000 - $340,000 depending on qualifications and experience.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations.

The above salary range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
