Job Summary

Sells electrical and electronic merchandise to customers using salesmanship and in-depth knowledge of merchandise. Explains technical or artistic functionality of specialized household merchandise. Provides full range of customer service functions.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Authorized at Class I and Class II stores only.
  • Sell electronic goods where technical knowledge is required in such areas as home entertainment systems surround sound systems Plasma LCD HDTV personal computers PCs DVD players cameras camcorders MP3 players etc.
  • Provides instructions and assists customers with various type basic computer problems questions such as system and equipment compatibility.
  • Listen to the needs of the customer in order to inform customers of specific functionality of merchandise and utilizes skills and knowledge to interest customer in purchasing products.
  • Explains recommends various computer and audio video merchandise and in-home installation services to customers to make buying decision.
  • Describe product features demonstrate its use and explain the difference between various product models.
  • Assists department manager in arranging space on sales floor setting up promotional fixtures and displaying promotional merchandise.
  • Counts promotional items before and after promotional event to determine quantities sold.
  • Inspects returned computers and components and audio video merchandise for proper operation for return to stock and resale. Ensures equipment returns are complete.
  • May be assigned to more than one selling center counter may operate a cash register or other sales related equipment. Verifies and accepts cash credit card checks etc.
  • Practices loss prevention procedures and performs other related retail sales duties.
  • May train other sales associates on the features and functionality of electronic products.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Requirements

GENERAL EXPERIENCE One year of responsible experience in clerical office or retail sales store work of any kind in which the applicant has demonstrated the ability to perform satisfactorily in the position to be filled.

AND SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE 18 months progressively responsible experience in retail sales performing the kind of duties which constitute the principal work of the position to be filled and possesses technical knowledge of computers and electronics i.e. computers cameras video and audio equipment stereo equipment TVs DVDs etc. as it relates to quality similarities and differences.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE Study completed in a college university junior college technical school or other comparable institution above the high school level may be substituted on the basis of one-half academic year of study for 6 months of experience provided such subjects relating to computers home electronic sales and or repair photography etc. At any level specialized experience may be substituted for required general experience.

The Navy Exchange Service Command (NEXCOM) is the headquarters for the worldwide NEXCOM Enterprise and is one of 11 commands under the Commander, Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP).

NEXCOM offers exciting opportunities to join a unique provider of goods and services to Navy Sailors and their families around the world.  We are a $2+B enterprise, operating over 300 Navy Exchange retail locations and 100 Navy Hospitality locations around the US and in 13 foreign countries, on nearly 100 Naval Bases globally.  Our NEX oversees the operation and management of retail stores, food services, hotels, auto shops, and other services.

NEXCOM oversees six primary business programs:

  • Navy Exchange (NEX) Retail Stores and Services
  • NEXCOM Hospitality Group
  • Uniform Program Management Office (UPMO)
  • Navy Clothing Textile and Research Facility (NCTRF)
  • Ships Stores Program
  • Telecommunications Program Office (TPO)

With the exception of the Ships Store Program, the NEXCOM Enterprise conducts its operations as a federal non-appropriated funded instrumentality. As such, the command is self-supporting with 70 percent of its profits given to Navy Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) programs and the remaining 30 percent reinvested in NEX buildings and equipment.

NEXCOM is a military organization and is subject to congressional legislation as well as oversight from the Department of the Navy. NEXCOM’s parent command is the Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP).

The NEXCOM Enterprise boasts over 14,000 civilian associates in a wide variety of jobs worldwide, over 40 percent of whom are military affiliated as either family members or veterans. The bulk of NEXCOM’s workforce is comprised of government non-appropriated civilians, many of whom are also military affiliated as either family members or veterans. This combination of military leadership and civilian business expertise enables NEXCOM to perform its unique mission for the Navy.
