Responsibilities:
The ideal candidate will be able to flex to support other mechanical and electrical technician duties at the CDA including fabrication of tubing, fixtures, pneumatic panels, hydraulic assemblies, instrumentation assemblies, data collection systems, and electrical hardware to support component testing.
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Follow established procedures to achieve safe and legal procurements of needed items
- Work directly with engineering personnel and/or higher-level technicians on the design, fabrication, installation, and operation of components and systems
- Usage and safe operation of mills, tube flaring equipment, saws, grinders, and presses
- Utilize detailed test procedures for safe operation of hydraulic, pneumatic, cryogenic, and high-pressure gas systems
- Interpret drawings, plans, and specifications for buildup and testing of flight type hardware and test components
- Utilize various tools and methods to perform work and maintenance on a variety of mechanical, fluid, and electrical components
- Have interest in developing relevant control programming skills in Labview and PLC systems used in testing
- Wear and utilize appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and clothing during performance of work duties, to include safety glasses/goggles, hard hats, gloves, masks, respirators, coveralls, harnesses, etc.
- Notify Supervisor and Management of any hazards or unsafe conditions in the workplace and advise on potential corrective actions
- General shop housekeeping including cleanup and organization of parts
Qualifications:
Typically, educational requirement is a High School diploma or GED or equivalent; and at least 15 years of relevant previous experience and continuing education or an Associate's Degree or equivalent and at least 10 years of relevant previous experience that proves technical aptitude and ability to work effectively without direct supervision. Candidate must have a strong inventory control background, be self-motivated, and be able to effectively multitask. Must have excellent communication skills and be able to communicate between vendors, engineers, and the Amentum Business Office. Most time in this position is spent communicating on the phone, in person, and through email. Candidate must have strong record keeping habits and be able to provide status updates on active procurements.
Required:
- Considerable experience with using NC machine shop equipment
- Solid knowledge of SurfCam software, working knowledge of Haas and Omax NC equipment along with other conventional lathes and vertical end mills
- Excellent organizational and customer relationship skills
- Ability to communicate effectively with personnel in problem resolution, work coordination, and operation of systems
- Perform training assignments including on-the-job training designed to develop professional working knowledge and abilities
- Adhere to established procedures and follow work area rules and safety protocols
- Ability to work in a team environment
- Safety-conscious mindset
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (i.e., Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
Desired:
- Familiarity with procurement and inventory software packages
- Experience working directly with vendors on quotations and procurements
- Experience establishing and maintaining an inventory system
- Ability to read and follow mechanical blueprints and schematics for pneumatic and hydraulic systems
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions including established procedures to safely assist in construction of systems to perform structural and fluid testing
- Experience performing testing including system buildup, operation, data collection, and troubleshooting
Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.
Physical Requirements: Requires sitting and standing for extended periods of time while working in a shop/lab environment supporting testing, equipment maintenance, facility buildup, and fabrication of parts, and will necessitate wearing appropriate PPE including safety glasses, safety shoes, and hearing protection when required (85%). Requires sitting for short periods of time working at a computer and participating in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at MSFC facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Limited lifting or work on ladder is required (5%). Work will be performed onsite at NASA/Marshall Space Flight Center (100%). Requires use of stairs or elevators to gain access to buildings.
Work Environment: Work will be performed indoors and outdoors at the Component Development Area Lab (85%) and in a general office environment (15%). Requires ability to interact effectively with co-workers, managers, and clients. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, and accurate communications, both verbally and in writing.
Equipment and Machines: Requires ability to operate a personal computer, telephone, task related software, and other general office equipment (80%). Requires the ability to operate tools and equipment to support tasks at CDA (20%).
Attendance: Work assignments are normally 10-hour shifts, 4 consecutive days per week. Normal workday is 7:00 am to 5:30 pm Monday through Thursday but may be adjusted to meet customer requirements or needs of employee. Regular attendance and punctuality are mandatory for meetings and other planned occasions.
Other Essential Functions:
Ability to communicate effectively and work under supervision is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others. Must comply with all "drug free workplace" requirements as mandated by directives issued by the appropriate federal contracting officer and the company, which requires drug testing for use of illegal drugs by employees in sensitive positions. Must pass all applicable physicals required for this position.
