What You Will Do
Apply your environmental knowledge to collaborate with stakeholders to continually improve the Environmental Management System (EMS) across Los Alamos National Laboratory and serve as a liaison between the Laboratory and regulatory agencies. You will work on a team of environmental professionals who ensure that the Laboratory minimizes its environmental footprint and upholds its certification to the international standard ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management Systems (EMS). This team provides subject matter expertise regarding the ISO 14001 EMS standard requirements, integration activities that align ISO 14001 specifications with other site-wide systems, performance of specific, required ISO 14001 certification activities including audits and assessments, and improvement of the Laboratory's overall environmental performance through collaboration with other environmental and integrated safety management programs and resources. The EMS team is part of the Environmental Stewardship Group in the Environmental Protection & Compliance Division.
This position will be filled at either the Environmental Professional 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Environmental Professional 2 ($83,900 - $136,600)
This position will demonstrate knowledge of ISO 14001:2015 and provide technical, operational, and process management support. The selected candidate will interact with other environmental and technical subject matter experts and a variety of other Laboratory programs to:
- Maintain the processes and activities associated with the ISO 14001:2015 certification program, including communications, policies and procedures, reports and metrics, individual projects and special initiatives.
- Serve as an advisor and liaison to other programs at the site for ISO 14001.
- Participate in audits and assessments of ISO 14001 requirements at the site.
In addition to what is outlined above, this position will supply advanced ISO 14001:2015 technical, operational, and process management support and guidance for the Laboratory's Environmental Management System. At this level, the position will interface with external stakeholders and third-party sub-contactors regarding the site ISO program and requirements.
This individual will:
- Lead cross-organizational teams to develop and incorporate complex, integrated improvements to ISO performance at the site, interfacing with all levels of workers and managers.
- Lead site-wide audits and assessments of ISO 14001 requirements at the site.
- Periodically, lead or participate in audits and assessments at other National Laboratory sites as part of the Battelle Labs EMS Communities of Practice.
- Independently initiate, organize and lead collaborative activities, such as championing targeted program improvements.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Proven customer service orientation and consultation skills sufficient to partner with client organizations to implement sound environmental practices.
- Skill to conceptualize and communicate major elements of environmental protection to both technical and non-technical personnel. Skill in the preparation and presentation of environmental protection reports.
- Working knowledge of one or more of the following areas: environmental compliance, National Environmental Policy Act, pollution prevention and sustainability, audits and assessments, program and operations/facility management, risk analysis, ISO system certification.
- Familiarity with evaluating work for associated environmental risks and hazards or quality standards, such as ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management Systems, or other Management System quality standards (e.g. ISO 45001:2018, ISO 9001:2015, NQA-1, etc.).
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
- Advanced knowledge of ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems or other quality standards or environmental requirements, and familiarity with implementation at a site or organization.
- Experience leading audits and/or assessments.
- Ability to identify, organize, and lead activities that support continuous improvement of the EMS program.
- Ability to build collaborative project teams and relationships while practicing customer service/fostering positive stakeholder relationships.
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience for the Environmental Professional 3 level:
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 8 years of experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post-graduate coursework may be desirable.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience performing the work required to develop and maintain an ISO-conforming system.
- Awareness of a range of environmental programs, types of environmental risks, compliance and performance issues and the environmental spectrum of work at a large, multi-disciplinary, corporate or university-like setting.
- Experience performing causal analysis and effectiveness evaluations.
- Training to ISO 14001 and/or other management systems (e.g. ISO 45001:2018, ISO 9001:2015, NQA-1).
- ISO 14001/45001 Lead Auditor.
- ISO 14001/45001 Internal Auditor.
- ASME NQA-1 Lead Auditor Training.
Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
