The expected pay range for this position is $136,824 to $150,000 per annum.

Financial Management Services (FMS), a department within Business Affairs, is responsible for creating an ecosystem which promotes innovative and sound financial administration policies and practices that balance controls, compliance, and customer service. FMS is primarily responsible for financial policy oversight, quality assurance and financial services at Stanford University and its affiliated entities. It also serves as a liaison to the hospitals and the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC). In this challenging and rewarding role, you will contribute to the Investment Accounting team. This position requires effective technical accounting skills, strong financial stewardship, and commitment to governance processes.

The Real Estate Accounting Manager will support the Senior Real Estate Accounting Manager and Staff Accountants by performing complex accounting functions. This newly created position focuses on managing and monitoring the accounting for the University's real estate properties. The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated and experienced individual with a strong real estate accounting, financial reporting, and operational support background.

This position demands a flexible, detail-oriented mindset, a genuine enthusiasm for the work, and a collaborative, dynamic approach to problem-solving. The individual will work closely with internal departments, such as Stanford Management Company, Stanford Land Building Real Estate, Faculty Staff Housing, and external property managers, ensuring accurate and timely accounting and reporting of real estate properties. Strong communication skills are essential for coordinating processes across various departments.

Additionally, the individual will leverage leadership and analytical skills to handle complex financial matters while ensuring compliance with industry regulations and internal policies. The ideal candidate will be skilled in problem-solving, process improvement, and implementing best practices for reporting and controls.

Preference will be given to candidates with technical accounting skills and a solid accounting background, enabling them to apply accounting principles to complex transactions. This role requires critical thinking skills to review current processes, understand existing workflows, and propose meaningful process improvements.

Key Responsibilities - Real Estate Accounting & Reporting:


  • Performing complex and technical accounting functions for the real estate portfolio. This includes conducting research, analyzing transactions, and recommending treating highly complex non-standard accounting transactions.
  • Oversee and manage daily accounting and financial reporting for the University's real estate properties, ensuring compliance with GAAP, internal policies, and relevant regulations.
  • Participate in real estate transactions, including acquisitions, dispositions, and capital improvements, and ensure proper accounting of property-related income, expenses, depreciation, and capital expenditures.
  • Perform complex and detailed reconciliations, closure processes, research, and critical analyses. Identify, prioritize, and resolve complex financial issues that span multiple areas, recognize underlying problems, and recommend effective solutions.
  • Conduct complex reconciliations, closure processes, research, and critical analyses.
  • Lead the preparation and analysis of reports that consolidate multiple data points, contributing to projects and decision-making processes related to managing and completing accounting functions.
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders, such as Land Building Real Estate and Faculty Staff Housing, and external property managers to ensure accurate and timely reporting. Collaborate with internal partners to recommend solutions that may lead to policy changes or the development of new controls or processes.
  • Preparing management reports and analyses to explain financial results and support presentations to senior management.
  • Manage and oversee employees' work, making hiring decisions, providing coaching, training, mentoring, and managing performance.
  • Maintain and enhance compliance with internal controls by recommending changes to ensure all transactions are executed and appropriately documented; proactively identify internal control weaknesses and system and process improvements; communicate to management and operate in a lead capacity in making remedial changes to tighten and enhance internal controls and mitigate risk.
  • Participating in critical analysis of existing systems and processes and identifying opportunities for process improvements while maintaining proper controls and compliance with internal/external policies.
  • Collaborate with staff to ensure consistency in interpreting policies and regulations with high-quality and timely service.
  • Assist the senior manager in coordinating and developing the annual operating plan and other projects.


TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THIS POSITION, YOU WILL BRING:

Education & Experience:


  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business, Finance, or Economics and eight plus years of applicable experience, or combination of education and relevant work experience.
  • Master's degree and/or CPA designation a plus


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


  • Strong understanding of real estate investment structures, financial reporting, and GAAP. Self-starter and demonstrated capability to gain the respect of others, influence people of varying levels of authority in multiple organizations and elicit cooperation without direct authority.
  • Minimum 7-10 years of applicable experience (real estate, lease, and/or property management accounting) or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to communicate and impart technical accounting knowledge and information in an easy-to-understand manner.
  • Ability to communicate decisions while educating at the same time.
  • Establish good working relationships with a diverse population.
  • Strong sense of service orientation, with a proven ability to balance controls and compliance. Ability to develop solutions when many variables are constrained and initiative to improve the department constantly.
  • Prominent level of professionalism and integrity with a demonstrated ability to work productively with and gain confidence in many levels of an organization. Ability to maintain focus, successfully execute plans, and bring closure to activities, tasks, and projects. Proven track record of getting things done.
  • Other skills necessary for this job are excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, the ability to work independently, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment as an agent of change.
  • Advanced proficiency in business applications, such as Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
  • Ability to interpret and apply advanced accounting knowledge and understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
  • Effective communication skills, including communicating information clearly and effectively to internal audiences and client groups.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and critical thinking skills.
  • Project management skills and ability to lead and contribute to a project team.


In Addition, Preferred Requirements Include:


  • Demonstrated knowledge of, and experience with, real estate investment software (YARDI) and ERP systems, preferably Oracle, with proven ability to apply knowledge to understand new systems and processes.
  • General understanding of SQL or relational database knowledge to extract data and perform analysis.
  • Attention to detail, accuracy, and prioritizing multiple tasks to meet deadlines and customer service response standards.
  • Proven ability to apply knowledge to analyze and interpret business policies and external regulations and translate them into compliant and efficient accounting processes.
  • Ability to observe trends in data, recommending and helping to implement solutions to increase efficiency, effectiveness, and accuracy of data.
  • Strong customer-oriented approach to managing work.
  • System knowledge (relational database, SQL, and/or AI)
