Research Assistant I-F.M. Kirby Neurobiology Center - Military Veterans

We investigate how the nervous system senses the external world. Our research combines approaches from neuroscience and biophysics, and studies steps from molecular mechanisms to behavior. We seek a Research Assistant who will participate actively in the laboratory's scientific thinking and research, in addition to aiding with routine tasks. We anticipate that this experience will provide excellent preparation for advanced study in the biological sciences. Laboratory members will provide all needed training. A minimum 2-year time commitment is preferred.

This Research Assistant will be responsible for:

  • Performing laboratory experiments and procedures, recording and checking results for completeness and accuracy.
  • Assisting in troubleshooting procedures if experimental results are unexpected or the quality of specimens is poor.
  • Supporting the lab by:
    • Maintaining records of results and methodologies in a log of work performed.
    • Maintaining equipment, lab area, and supplies in a neat professional manner.
    • Sterilizing and cleaning glassware, and preparing media and other materials using appropriate procedures.
    • Maintaining an inventory of supplies and reagents, including processing orders.
    • Attending courses in safety procedures, such as for handling, storage, and disposal of biohazardous, flammable, corrosive, and toxic materials.
    • Carrying out all laboratory activities in compliance with applicable regulations and protocols.
  • Conducting literature searches and reviews for relevant knowledge.
  • Furthering their own knowledge of research and laboratory techniques by conferring with others and attending seminars and conferences as needed.
  • Contributing to the team and potentially working between departments and organizations.

In order to qualify, you must have:
  • A Bachelor's Degree in STEM preferably with a GPA of >3.5, with a focus in Neuroscience, Biology, General Chemistry, Physics, Calculus, and Computer Science.
  • Prior Laboratory experience required.
  • Prior laboratory experience working with animals and tissues is preferred. Comfort with such work is required.
  • Analytical skills to resolve problems that require the use of basic scientific, mathematical, or technical principles.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • A two-year time commitment is preferred.
