Department Background: The CALS School of Integrative of Plant Science (SIPS) encompasses five fields: Horticulture, Plant Biology, Plant Breeding & Genetics, Plant Pathology and Plant-Microbe Biology, and Soil and Crop Sciences. Combined there are 100+ faculty, ~200 undergraduate majors, 200+ graduate students in six fields, and 600+ other employees located in Ithaca, Geneva, and other satellite locations across New York State. The School offers the multidisciplinary undergraduate major in the Plant Sciences and is also home to the Agricultural Sciences major. School faculty also contribute to the Biology, Global Development, and Viticulture & Enology majors. About the CSFP : The Cornell Small Farms Program (CSFP) is housed within SIPS. We work primarily with small farm owners, farm employees, aspiring and new farmers, urban growers, and those who provide services to small farms. We help farmers get expert assistance to facilitate all phases of small farm development. Position Summary: The Cornell Small Farms Program (SFP) is searching for a Bilingual Project Associate to join a dynamic team of educators committed to providing education, training and networking opportunities for Spanish-first farmers throughout NYS. This Associate will help build, strengthen, and expand Spanish-first farmer audience engagement with the Cornell Small Farms Program. This individual will focus significant effort on training and communications to connect Asylum Seekers with agricultural careers and livelihoods in New York State and Latino/a aspiring farmers with resources and information. In this role, the person will work to increase awareness of NY agriculture employment and training opportunities to prepare asylum seekers for different types of agricultural work. This will include collaboration and communication with other Cornell programs, employers, and service agencies to offer (virtual and in-person) educational events/workshops. This position will require the ability and willingness to connect with diverse groups of Asylum Seekers currently residing in New York City and upstate cities. This individual will also support CSFP in person and online training for new Latina/o farmers and those aspiring to farm. It will include sharing technical information and connecting individuals with other resources to support their farm goals, as well as collaborating on developing new resources. Travel to meet new farmers and build relationships will be essential. This position requires the ability to work both independently, as well as part of a team with initiative, creativity, and collaboration. Some travel and overnight trips to around NYS are expected for outreach to asylum seekers, attendance at conferences and visits with Latino/a farmers. This individual will be expected to uphold the SFP values of cultural humility, inclusivity, empathy, while respecting and honoring all voices. This Associate will be a full member of the SFP staff and is expected to develop close working relationships with all SFP Associates, participating in staff meetings and other SFP events. The individual will represent the Project and Program at state meetings and provide presentations to farmers and other stakeholders about the SFP efforts. Contributions to the monthly SFP e-newsletter and quarterly magazine expected. This position is renewable annually, based upon satisfactory performance and continued funding. Relocation assistance will not be provided for this position. Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and 2 to 4 years relevant experience or equivalent combination. Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion , and wellbeing. Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Bilingual (Spanish/English) fluency. Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members. Experience working directly with refugees, Latino/a farmers, and/or immigrants. Experience in job training or skill building. Experience creating training or education programs for underserved audiences. Must be personable and flexible, with excellent organizational, time management, and customer service skills. Must be comfortable working in an environment where change in process is the norm. Good working knowledge of current software, such as Microsoft Office, Zoom and Google Tools, and possesses the ability to quickly learn new platforms. Must be willing to travel within New York State, most frequently the New York City metropolitan area. Preferred Qualifications: MS in agriculture or natural resource management. Familiarity and demonstrated cultural awareness of Latino/Latina/Latinx farming communities Experience coordinating educational programs designed for limited English proficiency audiences. Direct farm experience and/or experience providing services to beginning farmers strongly preferred. Enthusiasm for supporting entry into farming as a career is a plus.
