Job Summary
The CN identifies and implements nursing interventions and evaluates results for a wide variety of patient populations, directs and acts as resource to other members of the nursing team as assigned and promotes compliance and support for policies. The primary responsibilities for this position consist of providing total, comprehensive, continuous and patient centered care which includes: assessing, documenting, planning, implementing, teaching, developing, and evaluating a comprehensive nursing plan of care; delivering direct patient care; ensuring patient satisfaction; training and delegating duties; and adhering to University policies and procedures as well as federal, state and local regulations.
Autonomous nursing care is the ability of a nurse to assess and provide nursing actions as appropriate for patient care populations based on competence, professional expertise, and knowledge. The nurse is expected to practice autonomously consistent with ANA Standards of Practice and Professional Performance. Independent judgment is expected to be exercised within the context of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches to patient care.
Provides direct patient care to a diversified patient population. Applies knowledge, experience and judgment to determine the importance of a situation, set priorities, and use abstract thought to evaluate clinical situations. Participates in patient and staff education. Demonstrates leadership skills. Demonstrates accountability for own practices as defined by the Nurse Practice Act.

Department Overview
The UC Davis MIND Institute provides comprehensive evidence-based assessments and intervention recommendations for children with possible neurodevelopmental conditions. The institute is a unique, interdisciplinary research, clinical, and education center committed to deepening scientific, understanding of autism and other neurodevelopmental conditions. It is a highly collaborative center, bringing together families, researchers, clinicians, community leaders and volunteers with the common goal of developing more personalized, equitable, and scientifically proven systems of support and intervention. The institute has major research efforts in autism, fragile X syndrome, chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and Down syndrome.
Department Specific Job Scope
The Genetic Nurse will provide clinical direction for patient care in an ambulatory setting under the direction of the physician, advanced practice provider, or physician resident. They will also provide routine, standardized nursing care to patients and families as well as facilitate access to additional services to include laboratory diagnostic services, genetic counseling services, and genetic nutritional services specific to the individual's particular condition. Provide nursing care for patients and families at risk for or affected by diseases with a genetic component. Obtain brief medical history and chief complaint from patients. Assist physician with examinations, procedures and other activities related to direct patient care. They will arrange for patient appointments for diagnostic testing, consults, referrals and admissions to the hospital. Prepare requisitions and samples for laboratory diagnostic testing. Provide injection and medication administration training. They will call in prescriptions for patients according to physician order. Promote positive health behaviors and self-care skills through patient education. Receive and returns clinically related telephone calls; screening and forwarding those requiring physician action. Complete medical/physical history forms and other related information for insurance companies. They will locate and provide genetic educational materials and links to appropriate community resources for patients, families, and family support groups. Prepare and submit prior authorizations for medications and genetic testing.
