Job Summary:

Performs a variety of seasonal gardening and grounds maintenance work considering the seasonal schedules or project plans for the NEXCOM Hospitality Group NHG property suitability of the weather degree of moisture in the soil and stage of plant growth.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Decides when and which standard methods to use in planting transplanting seeding re-sodding mulching dusting spraying watering cultivating cutting arranging pruning and trimming trees shrubs flowers and grass.
  • Inspects for plant diseases molds brown spots rusts blight mildew plant insects leaf miner scales borers slugs and unusual or poor plant growth. Selects and uses fungicides insecticides and herbicides for the control of diseases insects and weeds.
  • Determines when plants need additional watering and how long they should be watered. Observes plants and thins or transplants when they have grown too close together or too large for their locations. Decides when shrubs have reached the proper stage of growth for trimming and when trees need pruning to remove obviously diseased limbs or excess branches.
  • Compute quantities of plant seeds and other materials needed for specific areas. Starts new plants in seedbeds or cold frames. May also reproduce plants through cuttings rooting grafting and layering.
  • Operates a variety of hand and power operated garden tools and equipment such as seeders spreaders edger hedge trimmers pruning shears and sprayers.
  • Picks up trash and vacuums parking lots and sidewalks daily.
  • Reports to supervisor or security personnel acts of vandalism and or damage to NHG facilities.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

This position is represented by the American Federation of Government Employees, Local 22

Requirements

GENERAL EXPERIENCE:

One year of experience performing gardening and grounds maintenance work.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE:

One year of high school education may be substituted for 3 months of general experience up to a High School Diploma or GED for one year of general experience.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:

One year of gardening experience that included responsibility of determining when and what standard methods to use in planting transplanting seeding sodding mulching dusting spraying watering cultivating cutting arranging pruning and trimming trees shrubs flowers and grass etc.

The Navy Exchange Service Command (NEXCOM) is the headquarters for the worldwide NEXCOM Enterprise and is one of 11 commands under the Commander, Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP).

  • Navy Clothing Textile and Research Facility (NCTRF)
  • Ships Stores Program
  • Telecommunications Program Office (TPO)

With the exception of the Ships Store Program, the NEXCOM Enterprise conducts its operations as a federal non-appropriated funded instrumentality. As such, the command is self-supporting with 70 percent of its profits given to Navy Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) programs and the remaining 30 percent reinvested in NEX buildings and equipment.

NEXCOM is a military organization and is subject to congressional legislation as well as oversight from the Department of the Navy. NEXCOM’s parent command is the Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP).

The NEXCOM Enterprise boasts over 14,000 civilian associates in a wide variety of jobs worldwide, over 40 percent of whom are military affiliated as either family members or veterans. The bulk of NEXCOM’s workforce is comprised of government non-appropriated civilians, many of whom are also military affiliated as either family members or veterans.
