Leidos Public Health Division is seeking a Bioinformatics Developer to support public health projects. This position serves primarily as a developer but will have opportunities to contribute to computational analysis and training. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data analysis workflow development, utilizing workflow management systems (preferably Nextflow), containerization, and version control. They would preferably have experience in computational analysis, including any of the following areas: quality control, genome assembly, functional annotation, sequence alignment, variant detection, and phylogenetic analyses, ideally with some varied experience working with human, viral, bacterial, fungal or protist genomes, transcriptomes and metagenomes. Finally, the ideal candidate would have some experience with training and teaching, as they would contribute to and lead trainings for users on a regular basis.
This position is open to remote work, with location preferred in the Atlanta, GA, metropolitan area for related travel.
Responsibilities:
- Develop, test, and deploy bioinformatics data pipelines and workflows using open-source languages such as Nextflow, on open-source platforms, such as Seqera Tower.
- Develop and execute bioinformatics algorithms and workflows in Linux-based high-performance computing environments; including cloud and hybrid-cloud execution environments.
- Write customs scripts and software to perform bioinformatics analysis using Python, Perl, R and/or Bash.
- Work together with the DevOps team in adopting best software engineering practices for tool and workflow development.
- Assist with developing standard operating procedures for bioinformatics analyses.
- Perform supervised computational analysis, including quality control, genome assembly, functional annotation, sequence alignment, variant detection, and phylogenetic analyses on varied source types.
- Use statistical analysis tools and develop visualizations to aid in interpretation of complex biological datasets.
- Assist with preparation of reports, presentations and papers for publication in scientific journals, conferences and meetings.
- Attendance of Atlanta-based conference and/or team gatherings, yearly.
- Contribute to the development, and lead, bioinformatics related trainings for user community.
- Provide guidance and support to users in bioinformatics data analysis, management of next generation metagenomic sequencing data or other related topics.
- Communicate progress orally and in writing with our scientific community stakeholders.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A master's degree in bioinformatics, genomics, molecular biology, genetics or related field with 2+ years of bioinformatics experience.
- Proficiency in bioinformatics tools, workflow management systems and platforms (e.g., Nextflow, Seqera Tower).
- Experience working in Linux environments, in a high-performance computing setting.
- Familiarity with cloud computing environments (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
- Strong scripting skills in Python, Perl, R, and Bash.
- Experience with bioinformatics data visualization and statistic tools.
- Experience with processing of Next Generation Sequence data.
- Strong communication skills.
- Knowledge of DevOps principles for bioinformatics pipeline management.
- Strong collaboration and teamwork skills.
- US Citizen or Green Card holder with the ability to obtain a NACI clearance.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Hands on bioinformatics development experience in public health setting either at federal, state, or local level.
- Familiarity with containerization technologies like Docker and Singularity for bioinformatics workflows.
- Experience in designing and conducting training workshops to the bioinformatics community on latest bioinformatics methods and concepts.
- Experience with version control systems such as Git and GitLab CI/CD pipelines.

Pay Range:
Pay Range $55,250.00 - $99,875.00The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary.
