The primary purpose of the Instruments & Controls Superintendent is to provide leadership to the Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) workgroup for Chilled Water Systems ( CWS ). This position supervises a workgroup that has responsibilities for all controls processes and systems, including chillers (water or air cooled), distribution systems and auxiliary components (heat exchangers, cooling towers, pumps, etc.) that are essential to the production and distribution of chilled water for the University. This includes advanced analysis, troubleshooting, maintenance, upgrading, and repair for power electronics, distributed control systems, and instrumentation for the entire chilled water system and equipment. This position works closely with designers, engineers, and contractors to plan, implement, and oversee additions, upgrades, and replacement of controls equipment and instrumentation. Additionally, this position works closely with CWS managers and supervisors to determine controls and instrumentation maintenance requirements and scheduling to insure safe and proper operation and control of the chillers and their auxiliary equipment.
The instruments & control systems operate 4 large-scale chilled water plants, including a sophisticated Thermal Energy Storage and Heat Exchanger System. The plants must operate continuously and are unattended much of the time. Planned expansion in 2025 include construction of a new chiller plant and a retrofitted plant which will require this position to oversee these capital projects regarding instruments and controls of this position and will likely require an expansion of FTE .
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or equivalency with progressive experience in applicable utility operations, including experience in formal supervision to include performance management. Extensive training in Instrumentation & Controls Systems (example - previous employer, technical school and/or military}. Extensive training in instruments & controls systems, along with some experience in system programming. These include DCS and SCADA systems, or similar systems, which can be achieved through a formal and/or informal training process.
Electrical Licensure a plus but not required.
Essential Skills:

Extensive training in Instrumentation & Controls Systems via technical school, military, or previous employer Extensive training in instruments & controls systems, along with some experience in system programming.
