Meat & Poultry Area Supervisor - Military Veterans

The Meat and Poultry Division enforces state and federal laws designed to ensure meat and poultry products sold to consumers are wholesome, unadulterated, and properly labeled. The division inspects approximately 200 plants statewide for red meat slaughter/processing and poultry processing and operates a program “at least equal to” the USDA Food Safety Inspection Service. 

 

The impact of this work is to ensure overall meat and poultry food safety and consumer protection by assuring these products are wholesome, properly labeled, unadulterated and safe for human consumption. 

 

The Area Supervisor coordinates all meat inspection activities within Area IX (this includes Ashe, Alleghany, Surry, Yadkin, Wilkes, Watauga, Avery, Mitchell, Caldwell, Alexander, Iredell, Burke, Catawba, Davie, Davidson and Rowan Counties). This position has direct supervisory responsibility for inspectors in the area. Applicant must reside or be willing to reside within the territory or in the immediately contiguous North Carolina counties.

 

Responsibilities include: Lead team of inspectors to accomplish agency goals in a safe and effective manner; Ensure staffing of establishments is done per FSIS guidelines in a fiscally responsible manner; Utilize all available management controls (such as PHIS) to monitor activities of field personnel and ensure agency mission is achieved; Analyze PHIS results for trends and address as necessary; Hold meetings and correlations to ensure inspectors are conducting their job responsibilities per MPID and FSIS policy; Coach, develop, and discipline employees when necessary; Hold employees accountable to agency ethics, safety and conduct standards; Assess employee performance and carry out the performance management program in accordance with agency policy; Read, study and master current and new regulatory issuances; Ensure applicable new issuances are implemented by Inspectors; Arbitrate and mediate differences of opinions/disputes among MPID personnel and plant management; Conduct reviews of potential new establishments; Advise new plant owners of regulatory requirements; Critique product labels submitted for approval; Special projects as requested by the Raleigh Office.
