Start your journey towards success! We are currently accepting applications for an Accounting Technician I in the Controller's Office of the North Carolina Department of Public Safety.

The Accounting Technician I is responsible for providing accurate accounts payable and disbursement processing services for General Accounting invoices. Specific duties include:

  • Accessing the SharePoint System in order to obtain invoices from each DPS Division.
  • Reviewing and processing Direct Payment Invoices and/or Purchase Order (PO-Matching) Numbered Invoices.
  • Utilizing the NC E-Procurement System and the North Carolina Financial System (NCFS) to research, enter and pay invoices for goods and services for all DPS Divisions.
  • Reconciling payment data and troubleshooting problems with payments and accounts.
  • Consulting with vendors and staff regarding account issues.
  • Processing confidential documents for juvenile drug screens, physicals, and other medical specialties.
  • Processing physician contract services and federal grant payments.


The employee in this position must have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with all levels of departmental staff; the ability to explain and interpret financial information while responding to staff, as well as vendors; the ability to verify and ensure the accuracy and validity of accounts payable transactions; the ability to examine accounting records to assure adherence to accounting standards and regulations; and the ability to recognize and solve problems of moderate complexity on a proactive basis.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits , including paid vacation, paid sick leave, paid holidays, retirement, and health insurance. Please Note: As of January 1, 2025, the salary range is $32,639.00 - $57,117.00.

About the Controller's Office
The DPS Controller's Office ensures that all department financial resources and funds are received, disbursed, recorded, and accounted for in accordance with all applicable State and Federal laws and regulations, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Department policy and procedures. The Controller's Office at the agency level has oversight responsibility of the North Carolina Accounting System (NCFS) in regards to transactions which affect the financial responsibility of the department and is accountable to the office of the State Controller for the integrity of that data.

To qualify for this position, applicants must demonstrate ALL of the following KSAs:
  • Experience in Accounts Payable.
  • Experience using the North Carolina Financial System (NCFS) and/or other electronic accounting system(s).
  • Experience processing direct payment invoices and/or purchase order (PO) numbered invoices and/or other invoice types.
  • Experience in using SharePoint.

Management Preferences : These skills are not required but managers may choose to interview/select applicants who demonstrate Management Preferences.
  • Experience working with the following types of invoices: medical specialties, physician contract services, and federal grant payments.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate's degree in accounting from an appropriately accredited institution,
or
High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two (2) years of experience in accounting work;
or
an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Military Experience
  • Applicants seeking Veteran's Preference must attach a DD-214 Form (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty that includes Character of Discharge - Member 4 or Service 2 form) to the application.
  • Applicants seeking National Guard Preference:
    • A current member of the North Carolina National Guard in good standing must attach a NGB 23A (RPAS).
    • A former member of the North Carolina National Guard who served for at least 6 years and were discharged under honorable conditions, must attach either a DD256 or NGB 22.
