As a Lead Custodian, you'll play a key role in ensuring our facilities are pristine and our team is motivated. Purpose: Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of Custodial Services, you'll prioritize, coordinate, and assist in the custodial work of your area, guiding custodians and student assistants to achieve excellence. Key Responsibilities: Maintain campus and residence hall facilities in top-notch condition. Ensure workstations, including offices, classrooms, restrooms, and hallways, are clean and organized. Keep custodial lockers and carts well-stocked and equipment in excellent condition. Accurately account for time and materials, completing routine and additional assignments efficiently. Consistently meet university needs with professionalism and improving skills. Follow up on tasks to ensure satisfaction and maintain a reliable attendance record. Position Information Full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, temporary position with an anticipated end date of December 31, 2025, with the possibility of reappointment. Position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours for this position are the following, but may vary based on operational needs: Wednesday through Thursday: 6:00 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. Friday: 4:30 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. Saturday through Sunday: 2:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Monday and Tuesday: Off The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego. Department Summary The Division of Business and Financial Affairs is responsible for ensuring a safe, productive campus environment while providing the highest quality service in support of academic excellence through thoughtful stewardship of financial, technological, infrastructure and human resources at San Diego State University. SDSU Facilities Services (FS), a department of Business and Financial Affairs, is a customer service-based organization providing facility maintenance activities through a transparent and deliberate process. It is responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair, renovation, remodel, and alteration activities in support of the academic and research mission of the university. Facilities Services employs over 235 employees (full time and students) and supports approximately eight million square feet of buildings (including residence halls and parking structures) and 280 acres of improved and unimproved land with an operating budget of approximately forty-five million dollars. Education and Experience Equivalent to one to two years of related custodial experience and providing on-the-job training and leadership to others. Licenses/Certifications Required Valid California Driver's License or the ability to obtain one within 10 days of hire. Key Qualifications Five years of work experience as a Custodian or equivalent position is preferred. Three or more years of experience leading or supervising employees is preferred. Graduation from high school or equivalent education and training is preferred. Completion of APPA Supervisor's Toolkit or equivalent training is preferred. Working knowledge or general understanding of collective bargaining agreements. Previous experience maintaining wood flooring surfaces, vinyl composite tile, LVT, asbestos composite tile and carpet care. Working knowledge of the methods, chemicals, and equipment used in custodial work and of the safety and sanitation practices and measures; and effective lead/supervisory practices and techniques. Compensation and Benefits Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $3,864 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.
