Michigan Sugar Company has an immediate, full-time opportunity for a Controller, located at the Corporate Office, 122 Uptown Drive, Suite 300, Bay City, MI 48708.

JOB SUMMARY

The Controller reports to the Chief Financial Officer and will oversee the company's accounting operations while ensuring strict compliance with all applicable accounting principles and internal controls. This role will focus on managing accounting processes, improving operational efficiencies, and maintaining adherence to regulatory and corporate standards. The ideal candidate will be a detail-oriented and proactive leader, skilled at managing day-to-day financial operations and leading an accounting team. This position also manages Inventory Accounting, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Payroll.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Accounting Operations:
  • Oversee and manage the daily operations of the accounting department, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger functions.
  • Ensure the accuracy of journal entries, account reconciliations, and the closing process each month.
  • Internal Controls & Compliance:
  • Develop, implement, and maintain internal control procedures to ensure the integrity of financial data and protect the company's assets.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant financial regulations, accounting standards (e.g., GAAP), and internal policies.
  • Team Leadership & Development:
  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff, fostering a collaborative environment to improve performance and development.
  • Provide guidance on best practices, technical accounting issues, and problem resolution.
  • Audit Coordination:
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for both internal and external auditors during audits and reviews.
  • Coordinate the preparation of audit materials and support auditors in evaluating financial data and internal controls.
  • Regulatory Compliance & Reporting:
  • Ensure compliance with corporate regulatory requirements, including accurate and timely filing of relevant reports, surveys, and questionnaires (ex. USDA reporting).
  • Work with external advisors as needed to ensure compliance
  • Process Improvement:
  • Identify areas for improvement in accounting processes and systems, recommending and implementing changes to increase efficiency and accuracy.
  • Drive automation initiatives and support system upgrades or transitions for better workflow management.
  • Asset Management:
  • Oversee the management of fixed assets, ensuring accurate tracking and reporting of asset depreciation and disposals.
  • Ensure proper accounting for capital expenditures and asset categorization.


  • POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor's degree, with MBA or CPA preferred, but not necessary.
    • Minimum of 5 years progressive leadership in accounting/finance.
    • Demonstrate excellence in oral and written communication.
    • Working knowledge of software programs (Outlook, Excel) and PeopleSoft/Oracle is an advantage.
