Camp Manager - Military Veterans

Position Responsibilities:
• Conducts all operations in accordance with the standard operating procedures specific to the camp location. Follows the plan as laid out by the Project Manager and Field Area Leadership.
• Directs all aspects of the field science program in conjunction with the Continental Field Supervisor and Principal Investigators (and/or field team leads).
• Responsible for directing staff through training & field preparation process at McMurdo Station, coordinating trainings from other work centers & personally delivering camp-specific trainings.
• Supervises camp staff and completes end of season evaluations on camp personnel in conjunction with the Continental Field Supervisor
• Serves as safety coordinator and ensures that all staff adhere to rules and regulations. Communicates all safety incidents and near misses using the ASC reporting protocols.
• Ensures the camp facilities and equipment are maintained and operated safely. Ensures that that the camp is tidy, and that waste is retrograded throughout the season. Responsible for all hazardous cargo identification, labeling, and handling prior to shipping back to McMurdo Station via fixed wing aircraft.
• Assigns equipment support, materials, and science support priorities daily in accordance with the season plan.
• May assist the Continental Field Supervisor in off-season planning if appropriate to the camp situation.
• Prepares cargo for movement to the field, completes load plans and cargo prioritization with Continental Field Supervisor and Fixed Wing or Helicopter coordinators prior to deployment to the field.
• Communicates professionally with their staff to relay information needed to be successful in their jobs. This includes, but is not limited to, staff meetings, performance appraisals, job requirements, structured trainings, standard operating procedures, and safety practices.
• Maintains detailed records of camp operations including fuel figures, camp population, flight information, weather observations, and emergency response incidents.
• Completes end of season report according to SOP.
• Supports required search and rescue missions as directed by the Field Area Leadership and the Emergency Operations Center.
• Acts as on-site Incident Command during emergency situations
• Interacts with National Science Foundation and other agency officials, both over the telephone and in person, in a professional and tactful manner.
• Responsible for implementing and maintaining a safe workplace program and ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.
• May provide remote skiway condition reports used by Air National Guard, NSF, NIWC Weather and Aviation Operations in their daily scheduling.
• Performs other duties as required.
Required Education, Experience, Certificates and Licenses:
• Bachelor's degree is required. An additional four years of relevant experience will be accepted in lieu of a degree.
• A minimum of four years combined experience in any of the following areas: weather reporting, equipment operation, cargo movement, fuel operations, skiway construction, camp construction, expedition outfitting in polar climates or high-altitude winter settings, National Park service positions, outdoor education, experience working with helicopters and fixed wing aircraft, guiding services, and/or logistics.
• An additional two years' experience must be in a supervisory or leadership role.
• Wilderness First Responder Certification
• Incident Command System (ICS) 100 and 200 certifications required (training offered free through FEMA)

Expected Skills and Competencies:
• Demonstrated ability to work and supervise in remote and isolated environments
• Demonstrated verbal communication skills, computer literacy, and problem-solving skills

Preferred:
• Four seasons of experience working in Arctic/Antarctica with direct experience working in a polar field camp is strongly preferred

Physical and/or Other Requirements:
• Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods
• Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica
• Successful completion of drug screening and background check required by employer
• Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSF
• Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum as required by the position.
• Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, living and working outdoors in extreme cold as required by the position.
• Must participate in community programs, such as "house-mouse" (chores), "daisy-picking" (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safety objectives.
• Valid Driver's License issued in the United States
• Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location.
