Lecturer, Center for Computing Education College of Engineering Department of Engineering Education Position Overview The Engineering Education Department (EED) is accepting applications for a full-time Lecturer appointment to teach undergraduate and/or graduate course(s)in the EED in the Center for Computing Education. Duties include but are not limited to: curriculum/syllabus design, content and materials development, teaching, and service activities. The selected candidate(s) will be expected to complete activities and provide support for developing and teaching undergraduate and/or graduate students, depending on chosen candidates degree certification. This role is expected to start as early as January 2025. The Center for Computing Education aims to be a premier hub of innovation, excellence, and inclusion in computing education. We envision a future where students from all disciplines have access to high-quality computing education that prepares them to excel in a technology-driven world. Our center aims to lead in the development of cutting-edge curriculum, foster diverse and inclusive learning environments, and empower students to become proficient in computing literacies, fundamentals of artificial intelligence, and/or data analytics. By democratizing computing literacy, we strive to produce a new generation of professionals who are adaptable, creative, and equipped to address the challenges of tomorrow's workforce. To support these efforts, the Center for Computing Education invites applicants for a lecturer position. We will consider all qualified applicants with expertise in engineering education, computing education, computer science education and related fields. Successful candidates will demonstrate interest and ability to lead the development and delivery of new courses to undergraduate students. All courses are taught in person on the Universitys main campus in Columbus, Ohio. The Ohio State University will not sponsor applicants for work visas for this position. Performance Objectives Leading the development of new courses offered by the Center. Teaching courses in the Center. Presenting course material and guiding students through assignments. Creating an engaging and inclusive classroom environment. Demonstrated commitment to student success. Collaboration with fellow instructors. Contribute to research projects that inform decisions and practices in the Center. Education and Experience Requirements Required : A minimum of a Masters in computer science (education focused thesis), engineering education, or a closely related discipline-based education field. Excellence in verbal and written communication. Familiarity with backwards design; eagerness to adopt backwards design Familiarity with inclusive teaching practices; eagerness to adopt inclusive teaching practices Desired : Familiarity with universal design for education Prior experience teaching computational literacy to non-majors (K-12 considered desired) Strong interpersonal skills. A discussion on strategies to achieve an inclusive learning environment for all students regardless of their backgrounds, expectations, and needs. A discussion of activities undertaken to improve teaching and/or mentoring. A summary of goals and plans for courses you would like to implement in our center. Teaching Statement . Write 1-2 pages narrative that includes: A personal vision for teaching and learning A description of teaching strategies or approaches for which you received training or have implemented. Justification for those strategies, highlighting how to achieve an inclusive learning environment for all students regardless of their backgrounds, expectations, and needs. A description of the ways in which your professional experience will inform the creation of new courses, enhancement of existing courses, and other educational activities for students. State mentoring skills you consider fundamental, including those necessary to effectively mentor students with different cultural backgrounds and those belonging to groups identified by NSF as historically underrepresented in STEM . Department Information Engineering Education The Engineering Education Department (EED) has a mission that includes advancing the engineering profession and enabling student success by: Contributing to developing world-class scholarship in engineering education. Modeling and advocating scholarly, evidence-based teaching within the College of Engineering. Developing and delivering state-of-the-art, innovative, multidisciplinary courses and programs in first-year engineering, engineering technical communication, multidisciplinary capstone design, and graduate education in engineering education. The EED was created in November 2015. The EED curriculum is centered around first-year engineering courses, technical communication, multi-disciplinary capstone, other specialized courses and programs, and a doctoral program in engineering education. About 4,000 undergraduate students enroll each year in the first-year engineering courses, about 900 undergraduate students in the technical communications courses, and about 100 undergraduate students in the multidisciplinary capstone courses. In Autumn 2024, 26 graduate students were enrolled in the engineering education doctoral program.
