Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:
The Department of Earth and Ocean Science within the College of Science and Engineering and the Department of Infrastructure Operations Services at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW), invites applications for a Geospatial Technologies Support Technician.

The position will assist with the research and teaching missions of the Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences and with the institutional support mission of the Department of Infrastructure Operations Services.

The technician will be responsible for Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences geoscientific and geospatial instrumentation inventory, maintenance, and training as well as geospatial software license (ESRI, ENVI, PIX4D, DJI, Garmin, ERDAS, etc.) management across the university. This includes uncrewed aerial systems and associated sensors owned by the Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences.

The technician will manage day-to-day operations and maintenance of all instruments and sensors in the Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences to ensure they operate with minimal downtime; develop training and instruction manuals, assist researchers with mission planning, and maintain use and maintenance logs. The technician will also support geospatial software deployment and management across the University of North Carolina Wilmington.

As time and training allows, this position may also contribute to other data collection activities supported by the Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences.

College: College

College/School Information:
The College of Science and Engineering offers a variety of programs leading to Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees, as well as Doctor of Philosophy degrees in applied coastal and ocean sciences; pharmaceutical chemistry; integrative, comparative, and marine biology; and psychology degrees. The college also offers combined bachelor's/master's degree programs in information technology/computer science and information systems, computer science/computer science and information systems, and B.S. in mathematics/M.S. in mathematics. To implement its academic programs, the college provides instruction and research opportunities in the natural and behavioral sciences, information technology, data science, computer science, mathematics, pre-engineering, and engineering. The eight academic departments in the college provide courses of study in each of these areas, in addition to interdepartmental programs in information technology, cybersecurity, and digital arts. A 2+2 in engineering; and 3+2 programs in computer science and electrical or computer engineering; and physics and electrical engineering, are also offered in the college. Post-baccalaureate certificate programs in environmental studies, applied statistics, and geographic information science are also available.

CSE students work with distinguished faculty and scientists, use cutting edge technology, and conduct impactful research. Faculty-directed research projects empower CSE students to apply what they learn inside the classroom and laboratory to real-world situations and prepares them for a variety of careers or advanced study.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Graduation from high school and one year in the field of technology related to the positions' role. Computer coursework may be substituted year for year for the required experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred education, professional skills and experience:

  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in geography, geoscience, oceanography, or a closely related field and at least one year of research experience
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively in a group environment and operate as part of a team to achieve the teaching and research objectives
  • Prior experience with programming (Matlab, Python), data analysis, Microsoft Office products
  • Prior experience with maintaining inventory
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills

FAA Part 107 licensure
