Hours/Availability: 10 hours per week, working hours will be between M-F 9a-4:30p. This is a 3-4 month temporary and Casual position

Unit Overview:

The University of Minnesota Libraries Department of Archives and Special Collections (ASC) is one of the largest archival holdings in the country. The Department comprises 14 distinct collecting units, most of which include archival materials, and has relationships with other special collections units in the Libraries, including the Wangensteen Historical Library of Biology and Medicine and the Andersen Horticultural Library.

Archives and Special Collections Central Processing unit is hiring to process the records of the Hazard Collection of Eugene McCarthy Records. The project specialist will work closely with the Head of Archival Processing to manage the arrangement and description of the collection.

Job Duties:

  • Report to and work closely with Head of Archival Processing to follow processing best practices, utilizing DACS best practices.
  • Participate in relevant archival processing and content management system training.
  • With the assistance of the Head of Archival Processing, develop a work plan for project completion.
  • Rehouse, arrange, and describe the archival collection.
  • Identify and make recommendations regarding deaccessioning and/or restrictions.
  • Identify and make recommendations regarding preservation for fragile, deteriorating, or damaged material.
  • Identify and make recommendations regarding identification of, specialized rehousing for, and arrangement of oversize archival material.
  • Research and draft historical and scope notes.
  • Complete a DACS compliant multi-level finding aid for the processed collection.


Required:
  • Possess strong written and spoken communication skills
  • Possess ability to follow directions and achieve goals under strict time constraints
  • Be comfortable working independently
  • Have advanced computer experience/knowledge
  • Have experience using Microsoft and Google document applications

Preferred:
  • Have experience with archival material.
  • Have experience using content management systems
