Environmental Automation Technician - Military Veterans

Basic Job Functions:

The Environmental Automation Technician will work alongside the environmental, maintenance, and operations teams to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the plant. While working as part of the environmental team, the technician will lead by example with respect to safety, reliability, quality, costs, process improvement, and project management. The technician will be responsible for the automation systems that control and operate the environmental systems across plant site and ensure the optimum performance of equipment for plant operations through continual improvement initiatives.

The environmental processes at Nucor Steel West Virginia will consist of several water treatment plants, fume exhaust systems, process waste storage (baghouse) facilities, etc. The automation systems controlling those processes will consist of different PLCs, HMIs, industrial communication networks, distributed remote I/O, drives and motor controls, hydraulic controls, etc.

This role requires the ability to understand, troubleshoot, and modify the environmental automation systems according to plant needs. The technician should be willing to provide electrical maintenance and installation support when necessary, alongside other environmental and maintenance teammates. The technician should not only be able to understand the underlying technology making up the automation systems, but also able and willing to learn the sheet steel making process and the practices and principles used in the environmental systems which support those plant operations.

Our  greenfield project is a new state-of-the-art sheet steel mill that will produce up to 3 million tons per year once fully operational. This advanced manufacturing facility is to be located in Mason County, along the Ohio River in close proximity to both Huntington and Charleston, WV.

     Safety is the most important part of all jobs within Nucor; therefore, candidates must be able to demonstrate the ability to initiate, lead, and uphold safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards at all times.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Two or Four year degree in Engineering/Computer Science/Mathematics/Physics or related field and/or equivalent experience
• Demonstrable experience or ability to troubleshoot, modify, and write software to control a function or system
• Experience troubleshooting electrical and electronic devices

Preferred Qualifications:

• Two years of experience in industrial process control/automation and/or related education
• Industrial process control/automation equipment upgrade experience
• Industrial electrical maintenance and installation experience
• Experience working in a heavy industrial environment
• Experience working on environmental processes that support plant operations
• e.g. water treatment systems, fume treatment, etc.
•  Experience maintaining or designing equipment
• Electrical (e.g. VFDs, AC induction motors, remote I/O, MCCs, switchgear)
• Mechanical (e.g. hydraulic controls, pneumatic controls)
• Experience working on automation control systems such as PLCs, drives, HMIs, hydraulic controls, etc.
• Experience with Siemens PLCs and drives, WinCC HMIs, and Siemens drives is most ideal
• Experience with industrial communication networks (e.g. Profinet, Profibus, Ethernet)
• Experience with Ethernet based networks like TCP/IP and basic networking
• Experience using data analysis to identify process or equipment issues and develop solutions
