This position will be filled at either the Scientist 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Secure Networks and Assurances Group in the Weapons Research Services Division is looking for an DevOps Scientific Software Developer to join our team. WRS-SNA is looking for Developers for our Development Operations team. In this role you will work as part of a team to support development projects with software development tools and processes within the Weapons Physics Directorate (ALDX) and Weapons Engineering Directorate (ALDW).

Scientist 1 ($92,300-$151,000)
After completing onboarding and training, contribute to developmental tasks within the Development Operations Team entails one or more of the following job activities:

  • Researching, analyzing, developing, implementing, and testing solutions and infrastructure which allow organizations within the weapons directorate to carry out the weapons mission at LANL.
  • Evaluating and applying solutions within scientific software engineering teams focusing on the area of weapons physics research.
  • Evaluating and implementing solutions and infrastructure within operational technology tools to allow weapons programs related to weapons physics and production to effectively manage their workflows and internal processes.
  • Efficiently leverage modern professional software development practices.
  • Installing and configuring software tools in support of weapons programs across the LANL weapons directorate.
  • Collaborating with the WRS-SNA Network Security team to ensure established frameworks and solutions comply with required security controls.
Scientist 2 ($101,700-$168,200)
In addition to what was outlined at the Scientist 1 level, at this level you will:
  • Collaborate with project and team leadership to propose and lead in the design of innovative project solutions related to software development, infrastructure improvements, and internal processes within WRS-SNA and the Weapons Physics Directorate.
  • Work independently on projects that require physics simulation experience and closely collaborating with subject matter experts in this field.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Technical Knowledge
For this role, you will need knowledge and experience in Linux, DevOps development tools. Experience with Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) pipeline and job engineering. Experience in containerization. Familiarity with imperative and object-oriented programming languages which include troubleshooting and working with software compilers and linked libraries. Experience working with interpreted programming languages.

Technical Development
Experience establishing and supporting solutions to support software development projects. This includes supporting software development infrastructure for multiple development teams. Experience establishing and managing code repositories for production development efforts as well as CI/CD based workflows.

Tools / Technologies
You will need experience working with the following development tools and technologies:
  • Spack package management or a working knowledge of similar package management solutions
  • CMake or other automated building and packaging experience
  • Atlassian (Confluence, Jira)
  • Gitlab CI/CD (Jenkins CI/CD is optional)
  • Common Linux/Unix utilities
  • Docker/Podman or the CharlieCloud container engine
  • C, C++

Collaboration
Ability to work independently and in a team environment to analyze problems, propose solutions to management, and deploy and document implemented solutions.

Scientific Software Development
You will need a general understanding of physics oriented scientific software related projects. Understanding on how these types of projects can be integrated into CI/CD pipelines/jobs for automated testing and deployment on compute level and HPC level resources. Understanding how these types of projects can be integrated into various user interfaces solutions in the following forms:
  • UI/UX solutions
  • Command line utilities
  • Web hosted solutions
Computing Environments
Knowledge about working in classified and unclassified computing environments.

Linux/Unix
You will need a working knowledge of key Linux/Unix user related tasks including:
  • Command line navigation
  • Command line file finding, editing, copying, deleting, moving
  • Command line building and compilation
Additional Job Requirements for Scientist 2:

Intermediate Technical Administration:
At this level some experience in Gitlab project and repo administration/configuration.

Intermediate Technical Contributions:
Experience and software contributions related to CI/CD testing of physics based applications. Testing and development experience in a High performance computing environment. Development within containerized applications and deployment of those containerized applications.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a bachelor's degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 2 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at higher level: Positions requires a bachelor' degree in a STEM field from an accredited college and university and 4 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:
  • A degree in Physics and or Mathematics is preferred. (Education or advanced research in these fields)
  • Physics simulation and post processing visualization solutions (ParaView)
  • Parallel and distributed programming (MPI, NVIDIA CUDA, OpenCL)
  • Fortran
Work Environment:
Work Location:The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations areat the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q/SCI (Position will be cleared to this level). *Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances.See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
