As of January 1st, 2025, the new salary range will be $41,655 - $72,897.
The HVAC Mechanic II position will perform the full range of technical work associated with the analysis and independent troubleshooting of the more complex construction, modification, maintenance, and repair problems in building heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems and their associated air handling and control mechanisms. This position will serve as the working supervisor in the construction, modification, or repairs completed by independent contractors. This position is responsible for approximately 120 VIPER sites around the State. This job is designated as an Essential position requiring employee to be at work during severe weather and significant events. The assigned work location is at TSU/VIPER-EAST in Lenoir County, NC. (Some nights and weekend work are required). Virtual interviews will not be conducted

Job responsibilities, but are not limited to the following:
- Maintain refrigeration units and their control systems.
- Work assignments will be in the form of work orders indicating the nature of the problem.
- This position is expected to identify the cause of the problem, determine materials and tools, needed and method of repair, and carry out repair procedures independently on most jobs.
- The more complex jobs may be reviewed by a technical supervisor to determine extent of malfunction, to assure that proper work methods are being followed and that work is of acceptable quality.
- Work is performed under the general supervision of a VIPER Network Engineer (Facilities Team Supervisor) and is reviewed to ensure satisfactory and continued operation of installations and repairs of HVAC systems and other related projects.
- This position is expected to provide preventative and corrective maintenance on HVAC systems within the defined VIPER maintenance schedule.
Section/Unit (TSU/VIPER - EAST)
The VIPER Network Unit carries data, and voice communications across the state for the operational needs of numerous local and county government public safety agencies and others to include but not limited to, the State Highway Patrol, Alcohol Law Enforcement, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Emergency Management, the State Bureau of Investigation, the Federal Bureau of Investigation as well as law enforcement, fire and emergency medical services of an increasing number of counties. The VIPER Network now has over 170,000 end users that depend on it for public safety radio communications. Based on end users, it is the largest trunked radio system in the world.
This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits .

The salary grade for this position is NC10. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:
- Experience and knowledge of refrigeration theory.
- Experience and Knowledge of electricity sufficient to troubleshoot and repair complex electrical control systems.
- Experience and knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and equipment used in the operation, maintenance, and repair of air- conditioning and refrigeration systems.
- Ability to diagnose equipment malfunctions and to prescribe and perform repair procedures.
- Skilled in the use of tools and equipment utilized in the repair and installation of air-conditioning systems.
- Experience and knowledge of the designing and operation of centrifugal and reciprocal compressors.
- Experience and knowledge of the design and operation of pneumatic control systems.

Minimum Education and Experience
High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and four years of progressive experience in the installation, maintenance or repair of air conditioning chillers, air handling, chilled water distribution and control systems including one year at the journey level; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualifications
Requires current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations part 82, subpart F.
