Position Summary
The Vehicle Operator Senior is responsible for overseeing a team of 4-14 vehicle operators per shift while ensuring safe and efficient shuttle operations at McMurdo Station, Antarctica. This includes providing direct supervision, task delegation, and performance monitoring of the team. In the absence of the Vehicle Operations Supervisor, the Senior assumes supervisory duties, ensuring all operational requirements are met. The role also involves vehicle maintenance checks, assisting with scheduling and dispatching, and maintaining adherence to US Antarctic Program (USAP) safety policies. Additionally, the Senior must work collaboratively with other departments, provide leadership to the team, and ensure smooth operations in a demanding environment.
Position Responsibilities
- Adhere to Amentum's SafeUp® program and USAP safety policies to maintain a safe workplace, ensuring safety is prioritized.
- Operate shuttle service vehicles (including 11-14 passenger vans, Foremost Delta II, and Foremost 56-passenger Terra Bus) on varying road surfaces in inclement weather, prioritizing passenger safety.
- Transport passengers and flight crew to and from the airfield ramp, following all airfield safety regulations.
- Assist the Vehicle Operations Supervisor in documenting employee performance and provide input for end-of-season evaluations.
- Help create and update the daily tasking schedule, including assigning vehicle operators based on flight movements.
- Assume supervisory duties in the absence of the Vehicle Operations Supervisor.
- Perform mechanical and fluid checks on shuttle vehicles before and during operation. Submit work orders for preventative maintenance and coordinate repairs with the Vehicle Maintenance Facility.
- Complete required shuttle and taxi logs and ensure timely updates.
- Communicate with team members via two-way radio, adhering to proper etiquette and procedures.
- Operate vehicles on a rotating shift schedule and provide on-call taxi services as required.
- Provide shuttle service to Scott Base and transport Long Duration Balloon (LDB) personnel as needed.
- Monitor flight statuses and update flight boards, dispatching tasking for transportation and taxi services.
- Perform "bellhop" service for incoming and outgoing flights as requested.
- Engage professionally with NSF, military, and other officials, both over the phone and in person.
- Participate in safety briefings and perform required safety reports and Job Hazard Analyses.
- Provide light vehicle training for other departments and offer support as needed.
- Interact positively with team members and maintain a cooperative work environment.
- Support workplace safety programs and initiatives.
- Perform other duties as necessary.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Minimum of 6 months experience in vehicle driving or equipment operation (e.g., shuttle or bus driving).
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Customer service experience and a focus on service excellence.
- Strong organizational and multitasking abilities with basic computer knowledge.
- Previous supervisory experience.
- Experience in dispatching or scheduling.
- Minimum of one season of experience working in the Transportation and Logistics (T&L) department or related areas in Antarctica.
- Ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods.
- Successful completion of Medical and Dental exams required for deployment.
- Completion of drug screening and background checks as required by the employer and NSF.
- Ability to lift and move equipment and materials, including heavy lifting, climbing, and working outdoors in extreme cold.
- Participation in community programs (e.g., chores, recycling efforts).
- Valid U.S. Driver's License.
- Ability to obtain and maintain facility credentials. U.S. Citizenship is required for facility access at McMurdo Station.
