Summary:
Supports cargo and passenger movements to and from both McMurdo and South Pole Stations, Antarctica. This is a hands-on position that requires operation of heavy machinery, material handling equipment, and frequent handling of boxes and cargo weighing up to 80 lbs. Successful hires will also exhibit strong attention to detail and the ability to labor outside in inclement weather for extended periods of time.
Position Responsibilities:
- Conduct and document daily maintenance checks on automated and manual material handling equipment, including pallet jacks, forklifts, Delta III transport vehicles, passenger vans, and pickup trucks.
- Operate material handling equipment for cargo loading and unloading operations, including wheeled forklifts with 4,000-15,000 lb. capacities and cargo sleds.
- Follow safety and security precautions for handling and storing hazardous materials, special cargo, mail, and passenger baggage.
- Palletize cargo for shipment via cargo aircraft, ensuring cargo is secured with appropriate devices and equipment in accordance with current USAF regulations.
- Ensure proper handling and loading of hazardous cargo according to military and/or commercial transportation regulations.
- Transport cargo to and from airfields and storage areas.
- Load and unload cargo and passenger aircraft according to established procedures.
- Check arriving cargo against manifests, and document overages, shortages, or damage.
- Receive, identify, and distribute cargo to end users efficiently without compromising the condition of the cargo.
- Conduct quality assurance checks throughout the cargo movement and pallet building process, reporting any damage to cargo or equipment to a supervisor for further documentation.
- Maintain and perform required preventative maintenance and inventory of tie-down equipment, including 463L Air Force pallets, cargo straps and nets, chains, and tensioners.
- Identify, label, and prepare damaged aircraft pallets and tie-down equipment for shipment to CONUS or Christchurch, New Zealand.
- Maintain a safe workplace and prioritize safety in all tasks.
- Attend and/or present at daily/weekly safety meetings.
- Perform other duties as required.
- High School diploma or GED.
- Minimum of 6 months of experience in functions such as:
- Loading and unloading aircraft.
- Operating material handling and other types of loading equipment or devices.
- Processing, scheduling, and maintaining records related to passenger and cargo movement by airlift.
- Completion of one Austral Summer season in the ATS Apprentice position or one season in McMurdo T&L
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Previous experience with remote logistics operations.
Physical and Other Requirements:
- Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods.
- Successful completion of medical and dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica.
- Successful completion of drug screening and background checks required by the employer.
- Successful completion of a Federal Background Check required by the NSF.
- Ability to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum.
- Capability to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold.
- Participation in community programs, such as "house-mouse" (chores), "daisy-picking" (clean-up around the station), recycling efforts, and safety objectives.
- Valid driver's license issued in the United States.
- Ability to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization (US Citizenship required).
