Position Summary:
The Large Passenger Vehicle Operator ensures the safe and efficient operation of vehicles used to transport passengers and equipment under varying Antarctic conditions. Drivers will operate on snow and ice and in variable weather conditions, transporting up to 59 passengers at a time. This role involves adherence to strict safety protocols, active communication with team members and supervisors, and proactive participation in maintaining operational excellence.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Uphold a safe workplace by following Amentum's SafeUp® program and USAP safety policies, with safety as the highest priority.
- Operate shuttle vehicles on diverse road surfaces and in challenging weather conditions, ensuring passenger safety at all times. Vehicles include:
- 11-14 passenger vans
- Foremost Delta II with passenger compartment
- Kress/Caterpillar 730 tractor-trailer with 59-passenger module
- Transport passengers and flight crew members to/from the airfield ramp, adhering to airfield safety requirements.
- Conduct and document required mechanical and fluid checks of shuttle vehicles before and during operations.
- Complete and maintain shuttle and taxi logs accurately.
- Communicate effectively via two-way radio following established procedures and proper radio etiquette.
- Provide shuttle services to Scott Base, Long Duration Balloon (LDB) personnel, and 109th AW personnel during shift changes.
- Perform on-call taxi services and "bellhop" services for incoming and outgoing flights.
- Monitor flight schedules, passenger transportation needs, and taxi services, dispatching tasks accordingly.
- Interact professionally and tactfully with NSF, military, and other agency officials.
- Participate actively in safety briefings, perform Job Hazard Analyses, Work Center Inspections, and complete required safety reports.
- Provide training in light vehicle operation and internal large passenger vehicle training as necessary.
- Support other departments and assist with general operations when needed.
- Maintain a positive and productive working relationship with all team members.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Minimum one year of vehicle and/or equipment operating experience, including at least six months operating large passenger vehicles or over-the-road tractor-trailers.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proven customer service experience.
- Effective multitasking, organizational abilities, and basic computer literacy.
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake endorsement.
- Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods.
- Completion of medical and dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment.
- Successful completion of drug screening, employer background check, and Federal Background Check required by the NSF.
- Ability to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum.
- Capability to perform physical activities, including heavy lifting, climbing, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold conditions.
- Participation in community programs, including station chores ("house-mouse"), station cleanliness ("daisy-picking"), recycling, and safety objectives.
- Valid U.S. driver's license.
- U.S. citizenship required to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization.
