Inquiries concerning this search may be directed to Berkeley Executive Search at executivesearch@berkeley.edu Department Summary UCLA Legal Affairs Office of the Campus Counsel (OCC) serves as the in-house legal office for the UCLA campus, including its professional schools. In that capacity, OCC attorneys provide counsel and legal advice to officers, deans, faculty, and schools and departments of the University requiring legal assistance, and provide coordination and liaison between the campus, the UC Legal Office of the General Counsel in Oakland, and outside counsel engaged on behalf of the University. Position Summary Under the general direction of the Vice Chancellor, Legal Affairs, and serving as a member of the campus legal team in coordination with the Office of General Counsel for the University of California, provide legal advice on the wide range of questions and issues associated with the administration, management and operation of UCLA. Areas of specialization may include, or be related to, supporting the research enterprise at UCLA including government grants and contracting, research administration and compliance, managing conflicts of interest, export controls, research misconduct, foreign research and engagement, institutional review boards, and promoting campus safety by working with the campus Environmental Health & Safety unit. Salary & Compensation *UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Qualifications Experience in research, federal regulation compliance, complex contracts, risk management and litigation processes. (Required) Experience with higher education law and Cal/OSHA. (Required) Experience with complex organizations and the management of significant legal issues. (Required) Familiarity with employment law and/or experience and expertise of how various laws, policies, and compliance matters impact staff. (Required) Ability to advise client on a wide variety of employment law issues and respond to employment-related claims. (Required) Excellent writing abilities including for correspondence, memos, and court filings, internal and external communications to a variety of audiences. (Required) Demonstrated effective oral communication skills. (Required) Demonstrated prowess in strategic thinking, organization, analysis and problem-solving. (Required) Demonstrated ability to create and maintain effective working relationships with senior administrators and a diverse range of constituents. (Required) Demonstrated ability in setting priorities, juggling multiple tasks, and completing work in a timely manner. (Required) A workplace style that emphasizes collaboration, teamwork, and facilitation. (Required) Readily and regularly professionally accessible to the Vice Chancellor, Legal Affairs, and campus clients. (Required) Ability and willingness to use standard computer software applications, including Word, Excel, email programs, Internet browsers, on-line legal research, and programs adopted by UCLA and the Office of General Counsel to track and organize matters and work product. (Required) Knowledge of legal issues associated with governmental/public entities. (Preferred) Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations Juris Doctor (JD) Degree from an ABA accredited institution and active membership in good standing of the State Bar of California (or eligible for immediate membership.) (Required) Must be a member in good standing of the California Bar (or eligible for immediate membership.)
