Position Summary: The Outpatient Bariatric Registered Dietitian (RD) works closely with the departmental and interdisciplinary health care team to provide nutrition care of obese patients preparing for and recovering from bariatric surgical procedures; providing care that is integrated and compatible with patient-centered medical goals and objectives. Utilizes the Nutrition Care Process and Terminology (NCPT) to assess nutrition status, identify nutrition diagnoses, and develop, implement and evaluate outcomes of nutrition care plans for patients at nutrition risk. Provides nutrition education and counseling to patients, families and the community. Trains dietetic interns. Applies evidence-based nutrition practice guidelines, instructional methods, and tools. Duties & Responsibilities: Applies nutrition care process for developing the patient care plan which includes assessing the needs of the patient and family, formulating the educational plan, implementing, evaluating and revising as needed. Communicates information and coordinates patient care with appropriate members of the health care team. Performs and documents comprehensive nutritional assessments. Assists patients to set individualized goals. Provides nutrition care consistent with Bariatric Surgery program philosophy. Coordinates dietetic care and monitors progress of MSWL patients. Coordinates with Food Service personnel to make appropriate food choices available to patients while hospitalized. Participates in decisions regarding in-patient enteral formulary and patient menus. Designs and provides nutrition education for patients and their families to facilitate behavioral changes and thereby improve nutritional status, prevent complications associated with bariatric surgery or prevent progression of disease. Train new staff and dietetic interns; accept responsibility for coaching, teaching, and mentoring to help meet clinical competency requirements. Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Required: Possession of current Registered Dietitian licensure from the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulations and credentials and registration from the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Must be able to communicate effectively (written and verbal) in both English and Spanish.
