The Opportunity:
The Recaust and Evaporator Superintendent role is critical to Smurfit Westrock's efforts to improve reliability and optimize area production units within the mill. This position works closely with operations and maintenance personnel to improve performance of equipment. One of the key deliverables of this position is to help shift the culture from a reactive to a proactive environment. The Recaust and Evaporator Superintendent is responsible for coordination of the operations and maintenance functions within the department to maximize the budgets and the reliability of equipment. The Recaust and Evaporator Superintendent will accomplish results by driving reliability best practices into the daily operation of the business in the Utilities areas.
How you will impact WestRock:
- Responsible for the specific work that gets planned and scheduled to ensure equipment reliability and "when" work gets scheduled to ensure process reliability
- Daily review of new work notifications including understanding the scope, screening for quality and need, setting priorities.
- Lead daily and weekly scheduling meeting to review work completed previous day/week, work being done and finalize the next workday/week
- Review the backlog and keep within manageable limits
- Lead routine annual outage maintenance activities
- Maintains budgeted production requirements at planned quality and lowest possible cost.
- Works with maintenance and operations staff to determine ways to ensure and improve the reliability of equipment and systems.
- Assure safety awareness, safe work and compliance with safety rules and policies in all work performed by maintenance or contractor crews.
- Aids and technical advice necessary to assist in the operations.
- Leadership, including workforce engagement, diversity, employee development, and labor relations.
- Communicate mill and department performance levels and standards to Operators.
- Responsible for ensuring that all work is performed in accordance with Plant Rules, SOPs, and Corporate Policies.
- Champion the use of and improvement of reliability tools:
- Condition-based monitoring and repair
- Time-based preventative maintenance
- Operator basic care
- Planning & scheduling
- Precision maintenance
- Develop preventive and predictive maintenance procedures
- Document metrics to track cost and reliability improvements
- Assess, and maintain, priorities for cost and reliability
- Ultrasonic inspections, hydraulic training, special electrical inspections, lubrication inspection programs.
- Recommend/request design changes.
- Perform direct engineering for small scope changes.
- Review spare parts with an emphasis on commonality and inventory control.
- Research developing technologies
- Perform life cycle analysis, failure criticality, failure modes/effects analysis, and root cause failure analysis.
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering- or equivalent
- Preferred experience includes:
- 3+ years of experience in Maintenance planning or supervision, Reliability Engineering or operations leadership role.
- CMMS, Project Engineering, NDE and Root Cause Failure Analysis.
- Proven commitment to safety
- Demonstrated problem solving/decision making skills
- Effective written and oral communication skills
- Successful candidate must exhibit an understanding of business processes and procedures, reliability processes and workflows, and be able to actively seek continuous improvement
- Desire to grow into a superintendent role
- Working knowledge of EAM Systems, Microsoft Word, and Excel
- Pay (or pay range): $103,500 - $172,500 DOE (Junior, Intermediate, Senior levels)
- Bonus/Commission Eligible: Yearly Short-Term Incentive Program (STIP) Bonus based off metrics

The salary range for this position is $103,500.00 - $172,500.00, depending on your role, level, and location. The benefits for this role may include short-term bonus incentive, health insurance, flexible spending accounts, health savings accounts, retirement savings plans, life and disability insurance programs, and a number of programs that provide for both paid and unpaid time away from work. Your actual pay will be based on your work location and other factors, such as your skills, experience, and education.
