Opto-Mechanical Engineer - Military Veterans

The Leidos Innovation Center (LInC) is searching for an Opto-Mechanical Engineer to join our Electro-Optics (EO) Research Team in Dayton, OH.  The successful candidate will utilize a strong engineering or physics background designing, testing, modeling, simulating, and analyzing the next generation of optical system mechanics for space-based applications.

This position will support multiple aspects of the design and manufacturing process of optical lens systems.  Addressing our customers’ challenging mission requirements necessitates critical thinking and complex problem solving. The successful candidate will be called upon to develop new and innovative solutions to challenging optical design problems.  The engineer will work as part of an integrated team but should also be proficient at working independently.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership to develop mechanical designs using CAD software (e.g. SolidWorks), managing work of other technical staff
  • Design and execute opto-mechanical system and component testing
  • Perform vibrational mode, thermal, and mechanical stress analysis on designs and hardware
  • Perform analysis of data sets and develop tools for visualization and manipulation of the data
  • Work well in a small team environment
  • Be familiar with Linux, Windows, MS Office tools like PowerPoint and Excel, MATLAB
  • Present project results to internal team for reviews, customers, and at workshops / conferences

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in an engineering discipline (mechanical, optical, engineering physics, or similar) or physics with 12+ years of relevant experience or Masters with 10+ years of relevant experience
  • 12+ years experience designing lens system mechanics
  • Must be a US citizen
  • Must have the ability to obtain a SECRET security clearance
  • Experience with optical design, broadband light sources, electro-optics, detectors, cameras, calibration equipment, and diagnostic equipment
  • Experience with SolidWorks or equivalent CAD package
  • MATLAB and/or Python programming experience
  • Experience in manufacturing, assembly, and testing opto-mechanical systems
  • Communicate ideas and results with executive leadership on matters with significant impact to the project

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or Ph.D. in mechanical engineering or physics
  • Strong statistics education or experience
  • Track record of developing new technical solutions, products, and/or standards in work
  • Experience testing lens systems experimentally to ensure they meet spec as-designed

Pay Range:

Pay Range $126,100.00 - $227,950.00

The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary.
