Job Description Summary
The University of Pennsylvania is seeking a scientist with expertise in mass spectrometry to fill a full-time position as the director of the fee-for-service Mass Spectrometry (MS) Facility for the Department of Chemistry. The candidate will provide mass spectroscopy services to Penn and outside users. Duties include operation and maintenance of mass spectrometers, training and assisting users, and providing low and high-resolution mass spectra to Penn and outside users for the determination of elemental composition and purity of a wide variety of compounds. Candidate will also work collaboratively with Biological Resource Service Center (BCRC) personnel to oversee technology development of the BCRC.

Undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers develop skills in laboratory practice, the analysis of findings, and in building models and understanding, while performing research in the leading frontiers of molecular science.

DUTIES:

The University of Pennsylvania is seeking a scientist with expertise in mass spectrometry to fill a full-time position as the director of the Mass Spectrometry Facility for the Department of Chemistry. The candidate will provide mass spectroscopy services to Penn and outside users. Duties include operation and maintenance of mass spectrometers, training and assisting users, and providing low and high-resolution mass spectra to Penn and outside users for the determination of identity and purity of a wide variety of compounds.

The position will be expected to advise on critical decisions on appropriate technology to purchase or adopt and be responsible for training researchers on the use and implementation of the technology. The candidate will be responsible for business lead follow-up and generation for the MS and Biological Resource Service Center facilities. The Center Director will play a supportive role in the submission of major instrumentation grants. The Center Director will report to Executive Director.

Primary responsibilities include developing workflows for the fee-for-service center to support ongoing efforts of the academic groups at Penn and other external colleges as well as industrial users. The responsibilities will also include continuation of business generation, facility instrument maintenance and general day to day facility administrative tasks. Further specific duties: Liaise with external business partners to further the capabilities of fee for service work. Incorporate new technologies and capabilities collaboratively with departmental principal investigators. Plan out instrument upgrades as needed and secure new equipment for expanding needs. Serve on the departmental Instrumentation Committee to identify and apply for external funding from government and foundation resources. Train and assist users (undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate) on spectroscopy experimentation and maintain analytical instruments.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's degree in chemistry with at least 3-5 years of experience in analytical is required. Ph.D. or foreign equivalent is strongly preferred. Ideal candidate will have extensive experience with UPLC, LCMS, MDLC and MALDI, characterizing both small and macromolecules as well as biomolecules. Ideal candidates will also have experience working with a diverse group of scientists on a variety of spectroscopic problems, managing budgets, purchasing, and invoicing in a lab setting. Candidate must be highly organized, have strong customer service skills to interact with a wide range of users of the center, and must demonstrate strong leadership and organizational skills.
