Research Specialist - Military Veterans

We are seeking a Research Specialist who will conduct research in the laboratory of Dr. Steven Keller and work in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. The position will engage in a range of research activities and will work to advance the overall mission of the laboratory in its efforts to expand understanding of cardiopulmonary physiology and improve the care of patients with critical illness. The position will utilize a solid foundation in basic laboratory skills and principles and will provide an opportunity to learn new techniques and methods. A qualified applicant should be capable of exercising independent judgment while participating in the planning of experiments and evaluating results. When needed, he or she will also provide training to other individuals who may be assigned to the laboratory on a regular or temporary basis.

The Research Specialist will work in a laboratory which utilizes both small and large animal models of cardiopulmonary disease. The laboratory seeks to study use of organ support technologies to maintain systemic homeostasis while furthering understanding of how these devices alter organ function. The work is anticipated to involve development and preparation of small animal models of isolated lung perfusion and engagement with other laboratories to further experimental models of lung transplantation and isolated organ support. The Research Specialist is expected to generate and analyze experimental results and prepare findings for dissemination.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Participate in planning studies and evaluating test results, utilizing detailed knowledge of research laboratory procedures and practices involving small animal models of isolated organ support and will assist in the preparation of large animal studies of cardiopulmonary disease.
  • Perform experimental studies of isolated lung perfusion of a rodent model.
  • Conduct bronchoalveolar lavage sampling of lung preparations.
  • Analyze perfusate samples and interpret results.
  • Generate precision cut lung slices from animal models to examine pathophysiological changes during disease development.
  • Independently troubleshoot technical and experimental issues.
  • Select, develop, perform and evaluate research methods.
  • Operate appropriate equipment.
  • May participates in protocol development, efficiency, and productivity.
  • Assist in development of new techniques and instruments.
  • Use various software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, electronic mail, World Wide Web, statistical packages, and graphics packages to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or test reports.
  • May be involved in establishing laboratory protocols.
  • Prepare reports.
  • Exchange routine information in an appropriate manner using good oral and written communication skills.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
  • One year laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
  • Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Two or more years of laboratory experience.
  • Master?s degree in a related field with related graduate experience.

Starting Salary Range: $17.11 - $29.90 HRLY ($45,000 targeted; Commensurate with experience)
